Reflections from a drive home

The most valuable lesson I have learned is that only half the rules of this world we have been taught actually exist. This includes the defition of who we are, the words we use and the limits of creativity and depth of understanding we posses. That a simple question is never simple, the amount of meaning given is completely contingent on the user ( Read more... )

You should talk more. Philosophy majors are the best.
Do you mean that the rules governing the words we use and the limits of creativity and depth of understanding we posess DO exist, or they don't? Because you could argue it either way I think, but one of the most interesting things I've realized from just being intensely analytical of actions and reactions in the fold of space I exist in is that intellect is meaningless. It's not always necessary to comprehend something in order to incorporate the things it can teach you into your existence. Life is a lot like plugging variables into a math equation. You put in effort, you extract a product. People who are truly successful tend to understand cause and effect through a healthy force of habit.
For example: Boy A sees Girl B at a party. He wants her. The equation for the hookup is as follows: He can only get her number if he talks to her, finds out whether there is a connection, and runs with it. Instead, he intellectualizes and convolutes the situation. He tries to strategize his presentation of himself to her. He thinks of a pickup line, tries to appear sensitive and knowledgeable, etc. He is, of course, snubbed.

Your idea about memories sounds like every japanese RPG I've ever seen or played. :)
I think your childhood is nothing more than a bunch of chemicals floating around in your brain, and as soon as you're too old to remember shit properly, it'll be gone. If nobody had the capacity to process or produce these chemicals, the past would effectively not exist. Even if you had a high-res digital camcorder to record your entire life with, all that means is that the past then becomes a collection of ones and zeroes on a disc. It's that whole tree falls in the forest thing.
If the past is chemical and the future hasn't happened yet, that means that the only true existence lies in the present. There's only the gliding moment.

Of course you could extend this line of reasoning to every single thing that happens in the universe. If there's nothing to perceive an event, or at least perceive some after-effect of an event, there is no event. What are your senses but machines that send impulses to the big computer in your head to be interpreted? If everything on earth lost the ability to see, there would be no light or dark. If everything on earth lost the ability to hear, there would be no sound. And so on and so forth.

I personally think alcohol is great medication for shy people, but if you don't like it because it puts you out of touch with the world, you should try hallucinogens. Mescaline will make you feel like Buddha because the stuff you say will be so meaningful.
