It was a nasty habit, sure, but Jim hardly had to worry about cancers or illnesses. He knew the dangers more than most people in this day and age though he'd never point it out. Why would he?

With a cigarette hanging loosely from his lips, he patted himself down for a lighter, praying he'd remember to snag one from the office. Nope, all clear. Rolling his eyes, he tilted his head to the side, scoping out the young man not far from where he was trying to spark up. Already had a lit cigarette, hopefully that equalled a lighter or he'd have to give up and get back to work.

Two days of correcting the spelling on all the case files that Gene's team seemed to of made him lose the will to actually live. No wonder he needed a good smoke before he tackled the rest of that utter mess.

"Got a light?"

Nathaniel continued to brood over the horrifying place this was, and what it did to his skin and general health, when a voice spoke to him, pulling the blonde out of his daydreams of Gene Hunt fetching coffee, or rather tea, to *him*. He looked up, spotting a man he had not seen before, which was not all that surprising, considering Nathaniel had just been transferred.

"Ah, yeah" He replied, voice a bit dazed still as he dug a tan slender hand into his pocket, handing out a pink and yellow lighter to Keats, with a bright smile on his face. Well, this man seemed way more pleasant then Hunt, at least. "I am PC Nathaniel Greenwood." He smiled still. "As you probably understand, I'm new around here."

Keats smiled and took the lighter, not wasting any time as he lit up and silently inspected the lighter in his hands. How different, he was used to the basic silver ones he carried around. Taking the first inhale, he turned his head to Nathaniel and offered out his free hand.

"DCI Jim Keats," he offered, ever the gentlemen, he knew how to shake a hand. Firm grip that wasn't too competitive or tight. "I heard, not much gets past me here, provided I keep my eyes out. Gene's tries to though."

And he does pull it off most the time, which admittedly burned Keats up inside.

Nathaniel's hand was a soft shake, more like a woman, but looking at the skinny long haired blonde, one could easily mistake him for one. The hair was wavy, and pulled back into a ponytail and he was wearing his uniform, that even with the smallest sizes looked a bit big. Not height wise, but thickness wise.

"Nice to meet you sir." he smiled, this man at least being polite in comparison to the degrading and violent Hunt. "Ah, yeah, I guess he did not report the beating up the suspect then." he looked like an angry child. "I tried stopping him but,.. well, I was ordered to leave."

Oh, now that made Keats pause. Beating a suspect? What was wrong with Gene Hunt, it was like he was trying to annoy him. "Well it seems our friend Gene needs to be reminded about the rules on police brutality, doesn't it?"

Keats had that look in his eyes, the one of determination but also joy, the fact that he finally had something to get this game going. Gene had been so quiet for so long but now he had his edge, he had something to pin on him. And it seemed he might have a new ally. Turning his attention back to Nathaniel, he stubbed out out his cigarette on the wall and offered the man a small pat on the back.

"Well than you telling me, see its blokes like you we need in a place like this. Everyone gets swept up into Gene's magical world and policing but only us level headed ones stay grounded."

Nathaniel grew a few notches by that. Not like he needed bigger ego then he had, but he still reacted to it. Smiling brightly to Keats, he nodded eagerly, pulling what he knew from different crappy cop shows he had seen. (what, the men had tight shirts and looked hot!) "I mean, they are innocent until proven guilty, so we do need to follow protocols even if the suspect is an arse." he tried to sound professional.

"I'll tell you at once, sir, if he go overboard with his way of being. He forced me to get him lunch." he scowled.

This was too perfect, Keats couldn't stop himself from smirking. He had an edge now, a way into Gene's kingdom when it was closed off.

"Exactly, doesn't matter who it is, the key to success is using proper protocol and knowing your stuff," Keats agreed, nodding his head before offering the lighter back to Nathaniel. Standing beside the other man, Keats slipped off his glasses and have them a quick clean as his mind processed the next move he had to make here.

Trick was to not lose this one like he'd lost Alex. He slipped his glasses back on and readjusted them, giving his new friend a small smile. "Thats very wise of you, its best not to get roped into his brutish ways. Stick with me and you might just be a descent copper yet, yeah?"

Nathaniel smiled. "I don't like force." Mostly because Nathaniel was so weak that a twig stick could break him. And if you pulled his hair he would cry. Strength wise, he was no copper at all. But he was smart. Sort off. In his things.

"And I know the rules one should stick too." Thank you CSI He nodded, looking serious. "I will tell you if he does something like that again!"

"Well you shouldn't have to, being a fighter has nothing to do with bein' a good copper. This isn't East Berlin and we're not in a war," Keats mocked with a small roll of his eyes. You wouldn't know with someone like Gene Hunt storming around and tearing the place to pieces.

"Wonderful, you know where office is?" Keats asked, curious if the new man knew his way around this place yet. Most people knew where Keats hid himself, deep down into the basement.

"To be honest, I have no idea. I would, however, appreciate it if you showed me?" he smiled, trying hard not to flirt with the man. Keats was reasonably attractive, and Nathaniel was always after someone. At least the man looked better then some of the blokes at this station.

"Right this way," Keats offered, gesturing for Nathaniel to follow him before taking off into CID, most things went over Keats head, especially flirting. He was too focused on his goals to notices much else. Keats weaved his way around the people in the hallway, making sure his new friend didn't get lost behind him as they headed for the elevator. "Any time, night or day, you just contact me if someone does something you don't think is right. Thats what I'm here for, discipline and complaints. I'm here to help."

"Day and night? Sir, I don't wanna wake you if you are sleeping!" he was faking worry. Because Nathaniel hardly cared about anyone except himself. It was in his nature. Self preservation first. And it had gotten him killed by the man he thought had loved him. Nathaniel was a bit annoyed that the man did not respond to his sublime flirting, but maybe he did not swing that way. Was annoying, but Nathaniel was pretty sure he would find someone eventually in this god forsaken place.

"Ah its fine, no rest for the wicked, huh?" Keats didn't really sleep much, a few hours every now and again, if he slept all the time then he might miss something. He was waiting, always waiting for someone here to slip up. He had a job to do after all. As they went down in the elevator, Keats leaned against the wall and smirked at the other man.

"Some things are important, especially when it comes to Gene, its safe to be cautious," When the door opened, Keats gestured for Nathaniel to follow him, the basement was dark and empty unlike the station above them. Keats prefer to stick to the shadows, it was comfortable and familiar.

"I myself need to have at least 8 hours to function." he shrugged, moving after the other. But the basement scared him, and he took a few steps closer to Keats. "Were there no top floor offices left?" he asked, obviously nervous. He was afraid of the dark. Very afraid of the dark. "You should get some more lights in here."

"I prefer to distance myself from Gene Hunts kingdom," Keats remarked with a smile, putting his hand on Nathaniel's back in a reassuring gesture, guiding the younger man along with him. "Probably should, need to brighten the place up a bit," Keats joked with a small chuckled, unlocking his office door and holding it open for Nath. His office was just as dark as the hallway, though once Keats found the light switch, it became less dank and creepy.

"I'll understand you there. I'd distance myself more if I could. I wanna be a detective, but I did not pass the test. " he pouted. "So I am just this instead." He whined, hesitating a bit before moving into the dark room. but nce the light was flipped up, he felt much safer and stepped in. Nath was no big fan of darkness.

"Nice place." he smiled while looking around, lying. It was hideous. But he was not going to say that.
