Gene had been on the go since first thing this morning. He had just got back to the station. He parked the Quattro and headed inside. Bacon butty wedged in his mouth, styrofoam cup of tea in his hand. He paused at the front desk to collect some files, getting greasy marks on them.

He jogged up the stairs, almost colliding with Molly at the top. He swiftly saved his bacon butty from falling on the floor and managed to somehow not spill tea everywhere. "Easy there, love. Can I 'elp you?"

After a night spent undercover as a prostitute, the last thing Molly wanted to here was another 'love' from a thoughtless, overbearing male. "You can start by dropping the 'love' crap."

If his hands hadn't been full of his breakfast and files, Gene's arms would've been folded across his chest at her comment. "Not gonna happen, love. Unless you drop your knickers first."

"That'll happen when hell freezes over." Molly, who was holding less then Gene, did cross her arms, looking as imposing as a five foot five woman in constable blues could look.

"Right then, what can I help you with? Get lost did you? CID up here, love. And unless you're about to put the kettle on and make a brew then I imagine you're in the wrong place."

"This whole mess with the new girl's head thing won't work on me. It was old the first time someone tried it and it's even worse now. CID is on the third floor, I'm meant to be right here and I don't make tea for anyone but myself." She looked back at the room she couldn't even see a desk in. "Now if you don't mind I need to find the arse that did this and give him a swift kick."

"Kicking my coppers is all well and good, within reason. But I don't recognise you..." Gene eyed her suspiciously for a moment, before discarding his now cold tea and half eaten butty in the bin. So much for breakfast.

"Now, I know I don't know all the plonks in this place, but you... I think I'd remember you. What's your name?"

"Plonk? Just how old are you, love." Oh, she was in a pissy mood and it was just getting worse. "My name is PC Molly Drake and I've had enough randy old men trying to paw at me today without dealing with another one at work."

Now his breakfast was discarded, he could actually cross his arms, files resting against his chest. "I think you'll find that's 'Guv', love." Bloody mouthy tarts. Not what he needed in a morning.

"Wait a second... Did you say Drake?" He arches an eyebrow, watching the girl with alevel gaze. "Any relation to Alex Drake?"

In the first weeks she'd been on the force people had mentioned her mum. They'd asked question or told her how proud she'd be. It only took once, though, for them to understand that there was a line not to be crossed. She didn't talk about her mum with strangers, and rarely with friends.

"I earned this job my my own rights. I'm my own person. And I don't talk about her with anyone. Guv."

"Easy there, princess. Was only asking." Gene unfolded his arms and reached for his packet of cigarettes, drawing one from the packet with his teeth. He lit up and took a long drag.

He exhaled smoke slowly. "You just might bump into her around here, that's all."

"That's. Not. Funny." Molly was seeing red as she spun in a half circle and started to walk away.

"Wasn't supposed to be..." Gene rolled his shoulders, before looking at his watch. "She's probably already 'ere by now. No doubt tidying my office. Bloody woman."

She stopped. Turned. Glared at him as hard as she'd ever glared at anyone. "Alex Drake is dead. She has been for ten years, ever since a bastard put a bullet in her brain."

Oh yeah. Alex was dead wasn't she? They all were. Well, that would make this conversation a whole lot easier... How was he supposed to explain this to a girl with a worse temper than Alex when he didn't even understand it completely himself.

"Her brain is just fine. She's just fine. Bloody annoying most the time, but fine."

Molly reached for her mobile, deciding that the man before her wasn't CID at all, but some sort of escaped mental patient. It wasn't there. "Where's my bloody phone?"
