"Certainly, what he said doesn't seem like it'd cause people to NOT donate, or NOT move forward."
On the contrary, numerous news sources noted that because of West's tirade, the lines as NBC *as well as* the donation lines were inundated with phone calls complaining about him, effectively derailing potential donators because of busy lines.
What he did, basically, was derail an entire relief effort, and shift it to his own politcal grandstand. He strayed from his script, and took the event's time to use as his own, turning an event that was about helping out victims of a natural disaster into his own little spotlight for his goofy/drastic political views.
Yes of course, there were no white/oriental/native american people at all in the Superdome. Yes of course, there were no white/oriental/native american people at all stranded during the 4+ days it took to get a sizeable, organized relief effort moving.
And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. Only moved once.
"Assume for a moment that we was correct, and lets expand it a little to basically cover this premise and to take it out of more racial terms: The government doesn't care about poor people. I'm not saying this is necessarily true, I'm also not saying it's definitely false. But assume for a moment that it is true. In that case raising public awareness of said problem would actually prove beneficial to the relief efforts on account of the fact that an angry populace results in pressure on a lethargic government to provide better aid."
A) That would be removing it from the context in which it was delivered. B) That would change the meaning of the statements that were made, which would necessarily invalidate this whole post.
West made it quite clear - he mentioned 'black people' not less than 5 times during the minute and a half he was allowed to stray from his script. He distilled the whole disaster into a concerted effort to 'keep the black man down'. He was not raising awareness of the plight of poor people in our country at all.
Aside from that, a concert to raise funds for a disaster relief effort is not the correct place to make accusations of blame. If he wanted to waste his own money and time to have a press conference of his own to get his own crazy conspiracy theory out in the open, more power to him. But he wasted just about everyone's time, money, and effort doig it in the middle of that concert.
"Now lets assume that what he said was completely wrong, that the government cares about poor people and is actually working as quickly as they can to do everything that they can. In this case his statements have little end effect on anything related to the flood, as quite simply, there's nothing more that can be done. Anyone angered by his words is highly unlikely to stop sending money if they were going to already, and some people might be inclined to do more if they feel that the government is incapable of dealing with this crisis properly."
My walking into a bank and annoying customers until the managers come and arrest me isn't going to make people stop doing transactions if they were already going to, but I did just waste the time of a couple managers, and possible a couple police men or security guards. The point there is that, whether or not it ultimately damaged the relief effort doesn't excuse the inappropriateness of the time and place in which West chose to grandstand. Under normal circumstances, people are not allowed to just go wherever and say whatever they feel like without any repercussions. A relief effort shouldn't have to deal with idiots like West hijacking airtime to pull some BS racist card and wave it around like solid gold truth, especially not without evidence.
I submit that Kanye West has no balls, because if he did, he would've realized that there bigger things to worry about than self-serving political grandstanding.
"I also find it curious that the west coast feed only edited out his comments relating directly to Bush and not his comments relating to the US Government as a whole."
I agree there. But I tolerate large organizations of people making stupid blunders a lot more than I tolerate one idiot hijacking other peoples' time to jack himself off.
And I quote: "with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible."
He wasn't JUST talking about black people, although it was indeed his main focus. This is somewhat understandable if not unfortunate. I again reiterate that I do not at all agree with how he phrased his comments. But the root problem he was exposing may very well be valid.
As for the phones being tied up, that was outside my model, a rather fatal flaw in it too. So I retract most of my statements with regards to the short term.
"If you see a black family it says they are looting if you see a white family it says they are looking for food.
"And you know that it’s been 5 days because most of the people are black and even for me to complain … I would be a hypocrite because I would turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before giving a donation and so right now I’m calling my business manager what is the biggest amount I can give.
"And just to imagine if I was down there, those are my people down there. So anybody out there who wants to help with the set up, the way that America is set up to help … The poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. I mean, Red Cross is doing everything they can.
"We already realize a lot of the people that could help are at war now fighting another way and they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us."
...
You picked the one mention of the word "poor" out of an entire thread of racist card drama. To focus, I refer to the very last paragraph of the quote. I sincerely doubt he was lumping himself in with the poor people when he says they've been given permission to go down and shoot *us*. That would make him a bigger idiot than I have given him credit for.
