I read somewhere that in some battlefield situations when a person recieved a non life threatening injury, that was none the less too painful to allow the person to flee, they would sometimes break a finger of two.
You see, the brain and body only have so many pain receptors. Inflict enough damage and all pain becomes indistict. And even though the person is more injured then they once were they can now walk and fight there way out. Because no one pain is overriding there every decision.
Only half the pain there brain is receiveing is the debilitating kind. So by hurting themselves they actually free there mind and body up to focus on the task of survival. What resilient creatures we are.
