gack!

I got back to SD on the 4th, after 2 days on the road. Except for a massive holiday traffic jam in Denver, the drive was quite relaxing. The afternoon I got back Don was waiting for me at the apartment. He cooked up some absolutely delicious steaks on the bbq outside and we had a fantastic dinner. It was the perfect way to settle back in to the apartment before the insanity of moving gets kicked into high gear.

And that insanity started yesterday. The amount of work I need to do this week in order to be ready to move is crazy-daunting. At Mudd, when I moved out, I gave away / sold a few things to younger students (books, the futon, etc.), threw away a ton of unneeded crap, and crammed the rest in my car. It worked. When I moved to UCSD, I again crammed my car full of clothes, electronics (computer, TV), and barely had room for me to sit and steer. That ensuing Christmas break I mailed all my books and movies via media mail (note to self: media mail sucks ass).

Having stayed put in OB these 5 years, I've amassed an actual apartment's worth of furniture, books, cookware, and random miscellanea. I started packing easy stuff (like books) a few weeks ago, and I've barely made a dent in this place. Today I posted ads on craigslist to try and sell most of my clunkier furniture. I've never sold anything over craigslist, so we'll see how this goes. I've severely reduced the price on most of the stuff I'm selling -- 80% or more on the IKEA furniture. Hopefully that'll help things go in a hurry.

I've already made one big mistake with the moving process: I waited too long to contact movers. It seems as if I should've had movers looking at my stuff and giving me estimates already, but the earliest one will be coming by is Friday. What this means for me is that there is a good chance my furniture may not arrive until after my job starts. I was already planning on bringing a week's worth (or more) of clothes with me when I drive to NY. I guess I'll also be bringing a sleeping bag, ground pad, blanket, pillow, etc., since I may not have my bed for several days.

The current plan is to have the movers (whoever I hire) come by to load things up on the 16th or 17th; hit the road on about the 18th; get in to NY on about the 25th. This schedule should give me a day or two to spend with mom and dad at their new place in North Carolina.

As for the rest of this week: pack like crazy, research apartments, hire a mover, get an oil change, and 100 other things I'm probably forgetting about at the moment. But most importantly, I want to make as much time as I can to spend with Don :-)
