Had this still been the cadet, unsure and easily flustered by Zack's teasing, there would probably have been a moment of pause at the sound he emitted under my touch. Perhaps it would have even ended there, the confusion I can still vaguely remember when around those two giving way to the thought that I had interpreted wrongly the information at hand.
But this was not my subordinate any longer; not answerable to any force, leaving him open as the enigma that had caught the attention of an insufferably persistent Soldier 1st class, and as a result my own. Even so, it was still mildly surprising to have him respond to my impetus act. To have him so close that his hands could move against me rather than contact through steel.
No one has been close enough for that since...Zack.
And Zack was alive now, wasn't he.
...
My action stills for a moment. I had pushed him away, hadn't I. I had tried before for his own good, but it had never worked -- a fact that I am still unsure was good or not. But now...Zack would certainly hold a vendetta if I harmed Cloud through this. It was the one inviolable agreement we held.
I am not sure why the thought troubles me.
He tenses against me, and I push it away, instead focusing on the removal of the extraneous accessories he had acquired as I keep him occupied.
