i've posted three stories for the apocalyptothon. which makes this the post-mortem, i suppose.

overall: wow, do i ever love ending the world. i mean, i knew i liked doing it when i wrote sailor, but this was a whole new level.

so. i got five prompts to work from.
my prompts, and what i thought about my prompts. )

aw shucks. friends are the greatest, you know?

okay - yes, you should. it's relatively complicated, with some conspiracies and weirdness and a whole genocidal frontier war background. the protagonists are teens, and you get the occasional angst and silly decisions, but in a believable way. also, the backstory stuff is believable for the ages the characters *were*, which is great. there are a lot of breaks for silliness and running jokes, though the actual source of conflict and goals of the protagonist are huge and kind of dark. my only complaint right now is that there isn't enough available to read in english. i haven't tried the anime at all, not sure if i will. the author isn't shy about killing characters, which i appreciate, and actions have consequences, both physical and ethical. i find edward elric compelling for the same reassons i find general jinjur compelling - they are kids fighting for grand things who wind up with too much power and not enough understanding of themselves or the world. but they muddle though. the characters other than the elric brothers are all complex in regards to motive and agenda, which makes the comparative clarity of the conspiracy interesting.

long sun: needs its own post. soon.

but the library only has eleven so far! also, i hate cliffhangers with a passion, and that includes any incomplete text. i mean, the ones that are clearly going to be complete some day. i don't mind reading/watching incomplete stuff that won't ever be continued.

general jinjur led the army of revolt, made up of girls from all over the lands of oz, in a coup against the scarecrow, who was made ruler of oz after the departure of the wizard. their greviances were mainly that the scarecrow was a randomly appointed ruler, but they also had some issues with sexist division of labor put in place by the wizard and maintained by his successor.

since they were an army of teen girls, and jinjur herself was a teen, once they seized power they didn't really know what to do with it - they hadn't planned that far ahead. their idealism and determination was enough to get them there, but none of them had realized what the reality of victory would be. also, once they took power, jinjur lost most of her authority, which was based on a combination of charismatic leadership and righteousness. so by the time the scarecrow managed to get back into the palace with a plan to oust her, she was ready to go. happily, directly after that, the long lost princess ozma was discovered (she had been transformed into a boy, had forced amnesia, and was kept as a servant by a witch) and retook the throne.
jinjur became a farmer, later. she's known for being pragmatic but hot-tempered, and for not suffering fools or deferring to anyone on account of their gender.

i remembered who jinjur was as soon as i hit reply. i have a goddess in one of my mythologies that is named ozmadere that is half ozma, half langwidere.

i was kind of shocked at the idea that you said you didn't know, as this lies squarely within the bounds of (what appears to be) your ken.

yeah, my oz ken is a little distant; i was like "general jinjur is a sci fi character?"
