So I just saw the Wicker Man. and im going to mention plot twists so if youre actually going to read the rest of this and going to see it you are warned.
I thought it was really good. i went in thinking it would be really corny with totally predictable plot but really it turned out very differently and i must say pretty refreshing. the interesting things about the movie was the female dominated society and seeing how it functioned, and also the ending which was actually really unexpected. as i said the ending was refreshing because it was not what you might have thought. the main character finally escaping that hell in some narrow feat would have been very predictable, but no. he just, died. at the hands of the society. and the thing was he did absolutley nothing wrong and died a terrible death and the society of the "antagonists" of the movie went merrily on. something you really do not see everyday in movies.
the main character played by Nicolas Cage seemed a bit off the wall in his actions at times, but like when he lashed out at the psychotic town folk, and yes even punching and kicking women in the face, you felt good for him. because like you can just feel and imagine the stress and isolation that came from the situation he was in. and the crazy thing was jsut at the end when what little connection and trust he had there was totally shattered and betrayed and then just died for it, liek i said the movie had some pretty great plot twists.
and i mentioned the hitting of women in the movie. im goign to say i thought that was great for the movie. but hear me out on this now. it was great because it shattered the typical conventions that i was expecting from this movie. in addition to the totally reverse ending, just the fact that there was a man actually going through with knocking a woman out, mind you only when they deserved it, instead of just taking some softer way out just because they were women. and this movie was totally not gender biased against women because even though he did that, the women in the end prevailed and their female dominated society continued.
which brings me to another thing that is somewhat off the topic of the movie. the issue is when men take pride in the fact that they will never hit a woman because they are men. if anything this is an incredibly sexist and stupid attitude. people might think its the "right" or "considerate" thing, but think about it. a man says he will never hit a woman because he is a man. he is saying that he will never lay his superior strength on a weaker, frail creature that is a woman. thats where that comes from. he is "being considerate" by not forcing his strength on a woman because she could not take it like a man. simply it is an admittance that women are lesser weaker creatures, so therefor you must take considerations and allowances.
now trust me, i am in no way saying that just hitting a woman whenever is alright. abuse against women is rediculous. but there is the difference. there is abuse, and there is hitting in situations that would be as neccessary if you were to hit a man. two very different things. the issue is not men not hitting women because they dont deserve it, it is men not hitting women simply because they are men. a woman is a person just as a man is. what matters is the situation at hand, not macho reassurances.
