Paleoanthropology

It has been awhile since I posted any poetry. So, I figured I would put up a piece I was working on for awhile (which means I wrote it in 2 hours and spent 3 months deliberating what I should do with it).

Essentially, the story behind this one is that I was sick of how there are a lot of typical use of sexual innuendo in poems regarding certain things. In particular, there was this one poem someone wrote in a creative writing course (who was a cool guy and all, don't get me wrong) that had a voice that likened smoking a hookah for the first time to losing their virginity. Sort of like he was going for a, "uh, uh, this poem is about fucking! Oh wait, the last line says it is about smoking a hookah, fooled you...not really."

So, I figured I would try to write a poem with a more novel and stranger topic. Welp, here it is!:

Paleoanthropology

I glance at fragments
under your complexion
and brush the dust
off the outlines of
your eyes
in the field
I want to examine your structure
quantify your strut
twist and turn your joints
in calculations
read the wear between
the cusps
and finger contours of fossas
discover
the range of abduction
between your hip and thigh
then lay fossilized
wrapped hard in sediments
next to you
