Future

Recently I have been trying to work out what I am going to do after my undergraduate work. The plan has always been:

1.Take MCAT
2.Apply to allopathic/osteopathic medical schools in Michigan
3.Volunteer in hospital
4.Work somewhere
5.Continue to work on items 1-4 until I get accepted into a medical school

My end of undergrad crisis has kinda hit me like a ton of bricks and I am a little worried if this is what I want to do. Regardless, I decided that I am going to take a year off which, if I do say so myself, is well deserved considering after the Winter 2009 semester I would have attended 10 consecutive semesters.*

Lately, I have been contemplating taking a shot at research in paleoanthropology and seeing if I could work for a professor in the field. I asked my GSI (graduate student instructor)after hominoid evolution lab for some advice about which biological anthropology class I should check out next semester, how I should approach graduate school, and/or medical school. It is always fascinating talking with people from the anthro. bio department. I even got to catch up on how a couple of past teachers are doing too. (There is really so much more I would like to write but I have to move on).

It is tough to break through in any field of physical anthropology, particularly paleo. Takes approximately 6-10 years to earn a Ph.d., the department could just kick you out whenever they want (which can happen if you just don't meet the right people), and it is extremely competitive (especially the Michigan program).

Either way, I am going have to continue with my academic commitment. Ever since I was in college I figured I would take a pre-med curriculum and major in Anthropology-zoology. Four years later I am still pre-med and Anthro-Zoo. I could do both in my lifetime, and it isn't that uncommon.

Just got to pick where I am going to start, then go for it. Huh?

*From Fall 2006 - Winter 2009 (expected). Consecutive means not taking a break between any Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer semesters.
