cultural anxiety

ok, so i remember reading that japanese horror often taps into a national anxiety that somehow relates the US's nuclear attacks.

i'm watching children of the stones and it, among other things i've been watching/reading lately that are british, is definitely using historical and cultural tensions about paganism (v. christianity) for it's fears.

and i was thinking, "what do the typical american horror movies have in common/what cultural tension are they tapping into." and i realized it's serial killing. there are other things in various horror genres, but the slasher film is pretty american.

this is a half formed thought but i don't think it'll fully form so there you go.
