[Queens NYC]: Please Help PFLAG this Sunday at the 'St Pat's For All' Parade
NYC TRI-STATE AREA PEOPLE: Have a lot of fun this Sunday while helping out with a worthy cause. Please come out to help and support Parents, Families,& Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) this Sunday afternoon rain or shine (or snow!) at the the 11th Annual 'St. Pat's for All' Parade & Irish Fair in the Sunnyside/Woodside neighborhoods of Queens NYC.
Meet up at on Sunday March 7th 2010 at 1:30 PM next to the Torsney Playground (aka Skillman Park) at the corner of 43rd St and Skillman Ave in Sunnyside Queens NYC OR email Larry director of Outreach/Media for PFLAG-Queens at: WillHelp (at) PFLAG- Queens (dot) org to arrange to meet up in advance and all go to the parade together.
The Annual 'St. Pat's for All' Parade & Irish Fair celebrates the diversity of the Irish and Irish American communities of New York. St. Pat's For All err's on the side of hospitality with the theme "cherishing all the children of the nation equally" taken from the 1916 Easter Proclamation of the Irish Republic, a vision drawn from Ireland's past and a guide the our present & future for all of us.
The parade follows a route through the heavily Irish neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Woodside. These neighborhood are probably as Irish as Dublin (where the Saint Pat's festivities are ALSO Inclusive and Welcoming to all - America it seems is something of an embarrassment since it lags way behind the home country) - they’re ports of entry for new immigrants as well as established families. The Queens parade always been tremendously popular, with mothers holding up their children and groups of men cheering from the sidewalks.
Including PFLAG other LGBT organizations having contingents in the Queens parade include Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), the Lavender & Green Alliance, Dignity New York and Metropolitan Community Church.
They’re joined by groups as diverse as the Boys and Girls Clubs, the New York Fire Department, and Notre Dame and St. John’s University alumni. There also will be a special contingent supporting the people of Haiti after January’s devastating earthquake.
Among the dignitaries participating are Mayor Michael Bloomberg, openly gay City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and NY State Senator Tom Duane. And a member of the Irish consulate always comes and reads a message from Irish President Mary McAleese.
Also attending will be NY State Representative Jose Peralta, who’s running in a special election March 16th 2010 against former state Sen. Hiram Monserrate, who was expelled by his colleagues after his conviction for domestic assault. Despite the conviction and expulsion, Monserrate, one of those who voted against legalizing marriage equality in New York, is running in to return to his seat.
This year's honorees are New York City Councilor Daniel Dromm and Sister Mary Lanning, a community activist.
