hangover fun

aha! i found it! i really did! stupid currys (an electronics shop) ... i will never go there again. they could have told me that my camera is known by a different model number here, or that there was a fantastic camera shop just up the street, but nooo. kerry-lyne told me about jessops, where a very friendly salesguy found the last battery and charger for me. he even charged up the battery for me! wowie! now all i have to do is convince the hostel that they should reimburse me. one manager i've spoken to said that she can write a letter for my insurance, but i really think *they* ought to pay for it. i mean, really! honestly!

my laptop seems to be the only one that can get the wireless downstairs! i am currently sitting in my room with my music out loud for all to hear, except there's no one else here! solitude and music!? fantastic!!!

ah, delicious sammiches. i bought blue cheese the other day, and since have been subsisting on sandwiches made of: blue cheese, chicken slices, lettuce, tomato, avocado. i ran out of avocado on my lunch sandwich, so i put on cucumber for my dinner sammich. indeed.

i really want to write postcards to people but i don't know what to put on them. for my dad i will write the story of bobby, a dog that was so devoted to his owner that he sat on his grave (the owner's grave, not the dogs own) for seventeen years. true story: there's a statue of bobby outside the cemetery (grayfriar's) and it is the most photographed statue in scotland. i heard the story while on a ghost tour, and what the lady told us is this: firstly, that though the name was the same on the gravestone, it was the wrong man. secondly, that because they basically piled bodies in wilynily, the dog was probably there all the time because there was lots of meat to be had. so that one's easy. but what shall i write to everyone else? i could put in neat facts about scotland, i suppose... i haven't had enough adventures to fill up most of them. well, that's probably a lie and once i buckle down i'm sure i'll have plenty to say.

everyone jaywalks here, even policemen. lights at most intersections go like this: first one road, then the next, then the pedestrians. i quite enjoy walking kitty-corner across an intersection; it saves time! of course, this leads to a lot of jaywalking because when one road has the green light, you can cross one way. BUT cars don't care about pedestrians here, and if you're in the way, you're fucked. they don't watch for you, so you have to be very careful! i've got it down now but in my first few weeks i was certain that i was going to be run over.

this city is possibly the most walkable city i've ever been in. i might be going down leith walk and get tired of the noise. all i would have to do is go one, maybe two blocks over to be on a deserted residential street. no cars, very few pedestrians. this seems to be true of the whole city. there are main thoroughfares (that's a strangely tough word to spell) and people seem to only use the other streets if they live on those streets. it's pretty great.

the day before the solstice i went out for a walk at 10pm. it was raining lightly and i saw a frog! it hopped in front of me and i thought it was a mouse, but once it reached the wall again it stopped and i crouched down to look at it: certainly a frog. i also saw a naked lady looking at herself in a mirror. no, i didn't stare. i got home just before midnight and the sky was still light! fantastic!

hmm, where to go? i'm going to go wherever it's warm and cheaply got to. ugh, what an ugly sentence.... on july 3rd i am taking an overnight ferry from newcastle to amsterdam with ninja, as she is returning home. she has her car here, which is why we are ferrying. i'm quite excited! we're going to ride bikes in amsterdam and then go to her town, which is oldenburg, i think. or something like that. it's her friend's birthday on the 4th and we are going to surprise him! i will stay a night there and then make my way to another german town with an airport. i was going to stay for three or four weeks somewhere, do some traveling, but then i had to go and get a job. sheesh! i might go to nice.

the job is at victoria wine, which is appropriate i think. i'm going to learn about boozes! i'll even get to take free wine courses where i will learn about wine and get drunk. this is english dave, the assistant manager at the store. he's the one who got me a job! he insisted that i bring my resume down, so i did. he was due to fire this guy who hadn't shown up for six shifts in a row. apparently when this guy saw my resume he got jealous and threw it out, which is why dave called mikey and had him find me and tell me to go down.

mikey is an interesting fellow. from new zealand, he's got only a stump of a ring finger on his right hand because he jumped up to hit the top of a soccer net and a hook caught his finger and tore it off. he has a scar on his forehead from when some drunk (here in edinburgh) smashed a bottle on his head -- he got off lightly: his coworker got stabbed in the lung. not that that's all that makes him interesting... anyway.

i need to cut my nails. what a chore!!!

i am getting so very sick of wearing jeans all the time! i have three pairs because there was a pile of free clothing in my room and they fit, so why not? i miss having black pants. very much so. wherever it is that i go on my trip i will do some shopping. anywhere's gotta be cheaper than here.

saw the movie "oldboy" the other night. i recommend it! mark and i rented it from the library! the library has all sorts of good movies... lots of kirosawa, and random old films. also newer stuff like zoolander. it costs 1p(ound)20, but i'd say it's worth it. there are movies here but... i've watched both bill & ted movies because there was nothing else anyone wanted to watch, and that should say something about the choice. i also watched tron (ok, i talked through the whole thing) which was great because i've been wanting to see it for a long time, but it was absolutely terrible. i can't believe that there's a special edition dvd of it floating about out there.

enough of these rambles!
