i am living rent free! for every two hours of work you do at the hostel you get one night free. i cleaned the common room the other day, which gave me last night free, and today laura, the head cleaner, asked me with such desperation if i would clean (as it was yet another going away party last night i was one of the few up before 11am, which is when cleaning call is) i couldn't say no. i did the sheets -- start at the top and work my way down (there are four floors) and take all the sheets of the beds of people who left. that took about an hour and a half, and because there was no one doing laundry, i did that too. laura came down and asked if i'd do it 'til five, so i did. so many sheets!

i think i might just stay here. i think about 70 people live here. if i get a moneymaking job and keep cleaning, i'll be raking in the dough! it's really interesting living here. i think this must be what college dorms are like. everyone knows what and who everyone else is doing, but there's no snooping and a surprising amount of ... maturity? i think i'm at the mean age. people hook up for a night of whatever with regularity, but there's no judging about choice, only some friendly teasing if you know the person well enough. i think if i left i would feel lonely very quickly. there's almost always someone around, someone to talk to or cajole into going out. if i move out i would be living with roommates... but it'd be more expensive (i would pay 55 pounds a week here, and rent is usually 70-90 a week), BUT i would have my own room, my own space to pick my nose and walk around naked in. well.

i watched the sunrise the other day... it was fantastic. the sun sets one hour later and rises one hour earlier than in victoria, so the days seem very long. it doesn't get fully dark until around 11 or so, and we're still not at the solstice yet! aah, so good.

i feel chipper and buzzy! i wanted to make myself a mojito (the girl who looks after the garden downstairs grows herbs, mint among them, and said i could help myself) but i couldn't remember what exactly goes in it, and anyway the convenience store down the road didn't have soda. hum. one day!
