from Chapter 5 (Glimpse of Hope)

How long can we keep wandering? Well, how long does it take to finish a Monopoly game? How many licks does it take to reach the center of a Tootsie-Pop? That’s a good question, one that Janey and I might attempt to answer someday. I don’t believe anyone has ever made it all the way by only licking.

Aside from conquering the Tootsie-Pop, Janey and I would like to start our own ice cream parlor. I guess you could say that’s a goal of mine (first and only). Dianne has an amazing talent for crushing any dreams of mine that are sincere. She’d rather I pursue her dreams. She doesn’t think I’m good enough, she doesn’t think I’m smart enough, and she certainly doesn’t think I am capable of doing anything of importance. She doesn’t really think I’m capable of much at all. I’ve come home with too many D’s and F’s on my report card.

She’s given up on me and I’ve given up on trying to please her with good grades in school. I’m through trying to take the talent I may have to the next level. Dianne is the little man with the top hat that tells you “Do not pass Go!” “Do not collect two hundred dollars!” I’d take pleasure in knocking her down with a plastic condo. But I will continue to treat her as a decent human being. Someday, I will show her! I’ll show her how smart I am and what I’m capable of. And I will laugh in her face.
