Under The Moonlight [Zuko/Katara, PG]fehrikuJuly 14 2008, 16:24:41 UTC
It wasn't unusual, lately, for them to stay up and talk long after everyone else had gone to bed. Sokka would wake sometimes and hear the lilt of his sister's voice and the quiet rumble that belonged to Zuko in the few moments before he would roll over and go back to sleep (to be honest, he didn't much care what they did so long as they weren't cranky in the morning-though he didn't think Aang agreed).
It was on a night like that, when no one was awake to hear them, that their conversation somehow turned to death. Katara was talking about all the places she wanted to go before she died, all the people she’d like to meet, when Zuko interrupted with, “I just want to fall in love before I die.”
They both froze as Zuko blinked and realized what he’d said. He mentally cursed himself for being so damn vulnerable-it was the lack of sleep-when he heard a timid voice ask, “But what about Mai?”
He frowned slightly and shook his head, rubbing at the back of his neck. “Mai . . . Mai was . . . a distraction. I cared about her, I guess, but it wasn’t love. Not really.”
“Do you think you’ll ever fall in love?”
Zuko turned his head to keep from looking at her. “I hope so.”
Gently, tentatively, a small, soft hand came to rest on his, and a hand leaned on his shoulder. Just as cautiously, he lifted an arm and curled it around her waist. They both relaxed as she sighed and snuggled closer; no other words were spoken that night, abandoned in favor of the light from the moon and the stars and the shriek from Aang when he found them still cuddled together in the morning.

Hopefully that was okay >_>

I could so totally see this, Katara and Zuko talking while everyone else is sleeping.
I also love the hint of jealousy on Aang's part, so in-character!
Awesome job. ^^
