Anyone that knows me knows I very rarely ask for help with stuff.
Every year, the 5th graders at our elementary school go to outdoor science camp for one week. It costs $300 a student. Every year, the school has a ton of fundraisers trying to help cover as much of the expense as they can - and provide scholarships for the kids who can't afford to go otherwise. Every student attends and it's as much an educational trip as it is entertaining and a memory of a lifetime. Sixty kids X $300 each = $18,000 + the expense of renting buses to transport the kids, etc. Long story short, we need to raise about $20,000 by January.
Now, granted, I don't have a child going this year, but I will next year. Oldest went last year and Youngest goes next year. I know the whole school stepped up for the 5th grade parents last year and they will again next year. I will reap the benefits of their generosity, so now I need to pay it forward.
This year, one of the fundraisers is being held by our local Barnes and Noble. This Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, anyone who shops in their store (or orders anything on the phone from that location) and says they are with our school.... the school gets a percentage of the purchase.
That could potentially be a LOT of money. And a long way towards our goal.
I know times are tight. I know that all too well. And I'm not asking anyone to buy something they don't need or won't use. This isn't a cookie dough sale or overpriced wrapping paper. Barnes and Noble isn't raising their prices for the weekend and if you have a discount card, you can still use it. ALl I'm asking is this:
If you planned on grabbing a new book or magazine, or a DVD or CD this weekend, would you please considering going out of your way to order it from my local Barnes & Noble? Just mention "I'm with Montalvo School" - and help a 5th grader go to camp.
