Q: What does being an idol mean to you?
Mami: I want to hurry up and appear more on TV!
Mami Futami is all about one thing: fun. Her one goal is to be an idol on television just because she thinks that quiz and variety shows look like a lot of fun. She has a devious sense of humor wherever she goes, and she’s always getting into trouble with some sort of mischief. Her partner-in-crime is her twin sister, Ami. Her pranks range from getting to stare at another man’s legs to setting up an elaborate trap of floating pudding lights and pudding royalty costumes to get another idol to admit she ate someone else’s pudding from the fridge...She gives nicknames to just about everyone she meets that range from tame (Azusa, an older idol, became Azusa-oneesan) to exotic (Yukiho, a shyer idol, became Yukipyon) to cute (Hibiki, an energetic idol like themselves, became Hibikin).
Her imagination knows no bounds! When playing detective in one episode, she interrogates suspects, goes on a stake-out, and dramatically reveals the “pudding killer” with her sister. She has the energy for it, too. She rarely runs out of energy, even when she’s practicing to learn a new dance for a concert. When not on the front lines singing or competing, she’s always on the sidelines yelling a cheer...not that she has time to do that lately considering her success as an idol. She can definitely go further, though! She’s ambitious through and through.
While her pranks and joking around might seriously annoy others at times (once prompting her agency to chase her and her sister out of the building), she has an almost unhealthy amount of confidence. As her vocal teacher stated, “Mami-chan, just because you sing confidently doesn’t make it right.” Just because she’s wrong doesn’t mean she’ll back down. She has a habit of getting lyrics wrong and she doesn’t care! As long as she sings and lives with all of her heart, it doesn’t matter! The twins really have no respect for others at times, and they have to be reprimanded or punished for their behavior.
When she’s not having fun, Mami gets very bored. Being stuck in traffic, for example, is one of those moments where she can really whiny and want things to move faster. Her video games are her life-saver, and it’s a hobby she enjoys much more than Ami (but they both enjoy games a lot). When not working or waiting for a spot on the schedule, she’ll play with her PSP knock-off. As for when she can’t...? She’ll create her own fun! At the beach trip, she brought squirt guns, boogie boards, and shoves for burying her Producer in the sand.
“It’s boring. Of course it is. Playing games, going to stores, and going to lessons... and even teasing you, Nii-chan...Lately, we’ve had to do all of those separately.”
As mentioned earlier, Mami has a twin sister, Ami. Mami is the older sister, technically. They did everything together before Ami joined the idol trio Ryuuguu Komachi. This left Mami performing as an idol alone (with eight other idols, actually, just none of them were Ami) and this showed a different side of Mami.
While one might expect her to get jealous, Mami was never the sort to be jealous of her sister’s success. Instead, she became lonely. She tried playing her video games with her Producer, but she was brushed off. She just had to fill the gap that not being with Ami filled, since her sister’s idol unit was so popular. Instead of this loneliness getting to her, though, she fueled it into inspiration. In a conversation between her producer her, she flat-out told him that her only goal was to become a super popular idol so that she could do jobs with her sister again.
Mami is definitely a hard worker, too. Instead of moping around, when the chance for a Live (concert) came up, she worked hard with all of the other idols, telling them that she’d dance so hard that they wouldn’t recognize her anymore. As a minor, she had to balance studying songs, choreography, and vocal lessons with school...but while math was annoying and tricky, she never let it get in the way of her dreams, and she will never do so. She may not like it, but she will stop at nothing to do what she loves.
This is where Mami is slightly different from Mami. It’s true, both of them are insanely energetic, devious, mischievous, rude, determined, and fun-loving...but Mami is her own person, too. She’s decidedly the more mature one of the twins in comparison. When playing games of pretend, she knows when it’s time to stop and focus on something else. She also openly talks about her feelings when she’s feeling down, but sometimes only if she’s prompted. She takes direction better, and shows a strong willingness to improve herself and show her abilities at every corner. While these differences are subtle, they do exist. Mami will still run up and punch her producer yelling “Mami Punch!” at the top of her lungs, but she’ll also be the first to speak up or point out something’s wrong if it’s bothering her instead of goofing off.
“There are things that you can't do alone, things you can only do with your friends.
To overcome such things, unity is strength.”
Mami works hard to have fun, she finds fun in working hard. That’s the kind of girl she is. As aforementioned, she can be grating on the people around her...but most of the time, she fits in perfectly and isn’t getting in the way. There are twelve idols in her agency, and everyone is aiming to be the top idol, even her sister, Ami Futami. Normally this would mean intense rivalries, but...and this is true for every 765 Pro Idol...there isn’t one. While they may want to succeed over one another occasionally, such as Mami wanting to surpass her sister’s idol trio, they all have each other’s backs. There’s no point in succeeding if you throw someone under the bus, so she works her hardest and supports all of her friends to her fullest.
She’s seen her fair share of hardships, too. She survived having her sister away from her. She welcomed Miki back after she started skipping practice right before a live concert. She filled in for Ryuuguu Komachi when a typhoon left them stranded. She rode the shoulders of her friends to win a sports competition. When Yayoi was bullied into thinking she was worthless, Mami and Ami’s “Miracle Baton Pass" and “Miracle Baton Catch" helped win the idol relay. When the most distant idol in their “family” of sorts was shamed in a completely unfair and outrageous scandal, Mami was with everyone sending get-well gifts. She even helped co-write a song for her. And when the same idol, Chihaya Kisaragi, choked on the big stage...Mami was one of the idols who grabbed her mike and joined her on stage to ease her through the pain.
While there may be threats that loom in her future, such as a rival idol company trying to shut them out, Mami will always be right there contributing the same level of fun and mischief that she always has. She brightens the mood, and she stands by her friends no matter what. Whether it’s sending a text message for support to her sister in their secret twin language (random emoticons) or putting her all into each step she takes, Mami Futami is a good friend to have...even if she gives you a nickname or tricks you into something. As long as there’s fun to be had, she’s there!

Telepathy. The ability to read minds. Was this pretty maid-lady serious? Sure, waking up in some strange room was weird enough...it was kind of exciting, really! This was pretty awesome for a dream, except Mami was 95% sure that this wasn’t a dream, because it felt so real, and...just thinking about it was exciting! She’d be the greatest detective, reading the minds of her suspects, or she’d be able to win all sorts of quiz shows. The possibilities, to Mami Futami, were endless!
Mind reading. The older twin hadn’t believed the maid when she said it the first time. Well, there was only one thing to do when presented with information like this, dream or not! Mami let out a low, devious laugh. If she was able to read minds, the maid would be the perfect place to start, wouldn’t it? Adventures would have to wait just a moment, this was the most important of things right here. She just had to try it; it practically be a crime not to! Ami definitely would not forgive her if she let such a unique opportunity go to waste.
“Ufufu~, leave it to Mami, then! Mami will find out exactly what you’re thinking!”
With that said, Mami placed her hand on the maid’s arm. The maid didn’t move. Mami didn’t hear anything. The idol closed her eyes and tried to focus...and then she tried to concentrate harder, furrowing her brow as she tried to access this maid’s thoughts. She tried placing her hand on the maid’s exposed skin again, and she focused and concentrated so hard that it was beginning to give her a headache.
“Any...second...now...! Mami...TELEPATHY!”
Yet, still nothing. The maid didn’t even flinch. After another minute of trying, she finally gave up and took a step back.
“So cold...just like Ohimechin...that wasn’t fun at all...”
