A little ridiculous, but heck. LJ is where I first learned about this sort of thing. Why not?

A friend asked me what cosmetics I use. This was my (overshared?) answer:

Goodness, that’s more of a loaded question than you think.

Most of my life, I’ve been the bare-faced, tomboy kiddo. Chapstick was all I ever wore unless it was a special event. When I needed to wear make up, I got the ZOMG IT DOESN’T COME OFF WITHOUT SPECIAL REMOVER! kind because I was too used to being able to touch my face and lick my lips with impunity.

In college, I became a regular at the local goth club. Who goes to the goth club without awesome eye make up? Not me! Putting on my face for the club (and following wicked_hot_makeup and related communities on LJ) is how I learned to apply make up attractively and effectively.

During those days, I was in love with Revlon Colorstay eyeliners and their 3 day mascara. I loved that stuff! I discovered Lip Ink on eBay and all hope was lost. I had a small hoard before the school year was over.

Sometime during my senior coursework, a friend of mine introduced me to Sephora. Oh dear. I discovered that $20 single eye shadow pots blend way better and last way longer than a $7 tray of 3-5 shadows. Oops. So over the next two years, my meager college kiddo budget acquired an almost entirely Urban Decay make up kit, piece by piece. Their eye and lip primers are still my favorite, as well.

I’ve never been terribly fond of make up base. I can apply it well when necessary, but I don’t keep it anymore now that I live outside. It means more to me to be able to freshen up with a baby wipe and not look streaky afterward than to have a flawless complexion.

My current kit is:

Urban Decay - eye shadows, 24/7 eyeliners, lip and eye primer, concealer

Bare Escentuals/Buxom - mascara

Physician’s Formula - translucent pressed powder, colored pressed powder, green concealer

Almay - make up removers, backup eye primer

My favorite lip stain was Vincent Longo till Sephora stopped carrying them. I’ve actually spent the last few years working to get used to wearing regular lipstick instead of stain, too.

My favorite lip colors are:

DuWop - Private Red (No kidding, best red lipstick ever on the planet, Amen. Applied properly with primer, liner, and powder, I could sleep, eat, and shower in the stuff!)

Tarte LipSurgence - Moody (Easy, natural, didn’t need a mirror to apply because the color was gentle enough it never looked messy around the edges. Great for work.)

Maybelline SuperStay 10 - lots (Actually a decent, weightless, long wearing lip gloss/stain.)

Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede - lots and lots (no reds dark enough for the club, but my favorite daywear and work lip color so far. Affordable, long lasting, doesn’t dry out my lips, and I can even wear lip balm with it and it doesn’t budge. Love it!)

Last fall, I discovered the wonders of the Garnier caffeine eye roll-on and the anti-dark circle/concealer roll-on. Both are available in the skin care section, not the make up section. I keep both in my purse and use them both almost every day. It’s my "Geez, Di. Look less dead!" quick fix. I can pair those with a bit of mascara and a little lip gloss and look like I actually took the time to put on make up. Love them!

So… yea. That’s the Way More Than You Bargained For answer to your question. :)
