Anger.

Several months ago, I applied for a job at the headquarters of a large office-supply chain, located right here in South Florida. I knew I was underqualified for the Sr. Copywriter position, but I applied anyway. I received a generic "we have other candidates who more closely match what we're looking for" email. Which was fine, I wasn't expecting a callback or anything. Just applying everywhere.

About a month ago, another position opened up, one I was qualified for, so I applied again, with a new résumé, online portfolio, etc. I was volunteering when I got a phone call from someone in HR, so she left a message asking to speak with me about my application. I called her back a few hours later, left her my name and number, and requested she return my call.

Days passed, with no phone call. I wondered if she'd gone on vacation. I contemplated calling again, but why should I? I had left her a perfectly good, detailed message, and didn't want to be pushy. I found her email address and sent her a quick followup, asking if she received my message and linking her once again to my online portfolio. No response. Until a few days later, when I got the generic "we have other candidates...." email again.

WHAT?

What a waste of time. Please do not call someone if you do not intend on actually speaking with them. I do not understand a business that does not return phone calls. At least have the common courtesy to dial my number and speak the words directly into my ear if you don't think I'm a match for your company, ESPECIALLY if you called me in the first place!

That was weeks ago. And the job was just reposted. All I can do is laugh. I'm glad I don't work there.
