title: she could never save her
fandom: the hunger games
rating/words: PG/~200
warnings: vague descriptions of violence
summary: On the television, there's a thud and then a scream. It might be Katniss. It might not be.

They all stare.

Prim swallows, knits her forehead, tries to block out the words and the whispers and the steady drone of the television, the words floating through the speakers echoing in her head, swimming through her soul. Her schoolmates sit, stone student statues, at their tables, eyes glued to the television where her sister is dying. Or isn't. Prim is too scared to turn her eyes to the screen and check.

If Katniss dies, it's all her fault.

Prim wonders if she would last as long as Katniss has, if she would have the courage and the skill and the gut to maneuver her way through the worldwide broadcast of Hell. Every part of her hopes she could. But every part of her knows she'd be killed at the Cornucopia.

On the television, there's a thud and then a scream. It might be Katniss. It might not be.

Prim glares at the school-issue potatoes festering on her plate, still too afraid to face her would-be fate, playing itself out on the screen. Another harrowing scream, definitely female, possibly not Katniss (hopefully not Katniss) and a collective intake of breath from the students.

She clutches her fork until her knuckles turn white, so no one can see how badly her hands are shaking.
