Title: Valentine's Day
Rating: PG
Summary: Elphaba has never celebrated Valentine's Day before, but she finds that she's the only one who can rescue Galinda's favorite holiday from being a complete disaster. This was intended to be bookverse, but it could really go either way.
Disclaimer: They're not mine :(

Here's my entry for the Valentine's Day challenge! My apologies for never posting any of my stuff on here before... it's mainly out of laziness.

The suggested words (love, red, chocolate, flowers, and blushing) are in bold.

“Miss Elphaba! Miss Elphaba!”

The green girl didn’t respond, too involved in altering the angle of her umbrella to block the falling snow. It was a particularly wet snow, one that melted on contact and left puddles for her to splash through in her heavy boots. She had no intention of letting a single flake touch her skin, but the wind kept shifting, so she was constantly on guard.

She just wanted to make it back to the dormitory, but Boq was making it increasingly difficult.

For it certainly was Boq. There wasn’t another male voice in all of Shiz that would call out her name so many times, begging her to stop and pay attention.

“Miss Elphaba!”

She sighed, turning to see the Munchkin boy hurrying towards her through the snow, his hair wet from the large, watery flakes. He held a bouquet of flowers in one hand, and Elphaba rolled her eyes, realizing what this was about.

“I was wondering…” he began as soon as she faced him, but she cut him off.

“…If I could deliver these flowers to Miss Galinda, the light of your life, the center of your universe, the only star in your sky. Would you like me to remind her of your undying love as well?”

“I never realized you were so poetic. Would you mind if I borrowed that part about the only star in my sky? I’m attempting to compose a sonnet for her.”

“Borrow away.” Elphaba took the flowers, shaking them lightly to get the snow off of them. “Was there a preference in regards to the undying love part? Or do you think she’s gotten the point by now?”

“Just tell her that I wish her a very happy Valentine’s Day,” Boq replied quietly. “Without sarcasm, if at all possible. I know you find my situation laughable, but I don’t need you ruining my chances.”

“If you’re going to ask so much of me, you should have bought flowers for me, too,” Elphaba replied, laughing. What chances do you have for me to ruin? she thought with a smirk, tempted to make such a quip but not wanting to hurt the boy’s feelings.

Boq looked rather taken aback by this idea. “I’m merely asking you a favor.”

“I was joking. I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, anyway,” Elphaba replied, waving quickly before turning back towards the dorm and continuing on her way.

Well, she had never celebrated Valentine’s Day before, at least. This year seemed destined to be different… Not that anyone was going to love her, or shower her in gifts. Galinda, however, didn’t seem about to let her ignore the holiday as she always had. She had begun decorating their room in pink and red streamers and hearts a week ago, trying not to notice as Elphaba rolled her eyes behind her newest book. “Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year, Miss Elphaba,” she had proclaimed. “It’s my favorite holiday.”

“Which makes plenty of sense, considering that the only romance in your life is Boq’s infatuation with you, which you continue to ignore,” the green girl had replied with her usual sarcasm.

“Some day, I’ll fall in love. Maybe on Valentine’s Day. For all I know, it could be this one,” the blonde had chirped brightly, skipping to the window to tape up a few more paper hearts.

Galinda was sitting on her bed when Elphaba reached the room, watching the green girl shed her wet coat and smiling behind a piece of chocolate that she was raising to her lips. “Happy Valentine’s Day! You left so quickly this morning… Chocolate?”

“Who from?” Elphaba glanced at the heart-shaped box on Galinda’s bedspread.

“Pfannee and Shenshen. Isn’t that sweet of them?” She bit into the chocolate, smiling even more. “Ooh, it’s got a cherry in it.” She finished off the candy, finally noticing the limp, wet flowers that Elphaba was holding gingerly. “Who are those for?”

“You, of course.” Elphaba held them out, noticing Galinda’s sudden blushing and speaking too quickly. “From Boq.” Did the blonde honestly think that Elphaba had gotten her flowers?

“Oh. Boq. How exciting.” Galinda’s face fell and she dropped the wet bouquet onto the table beside her bed.

“What were you expecting? Is there some other suitor of yours I should know about? Someone else who’s going to be begging me to convey their undying love to you?”

“No.” Galinda fell silent, and Elphaba sighed. Not another one of her inexplicable sulks. At least the beautiful blonde was fortunate enough to have a suitor. No one was even going to do so much as wish the green girl a happy Valentine’s Day.

No one besides Galinda, at least.

Elphaba kicked off her wet boots and climbed onto her bed, reaching for the book she had been reading the night before. She opened to the page she had left off at - a discussion of love, interestingly enough, and how it might be explained by science - to find a pink envelope tucked behind her bookmark.

She glanced up at Galinda, who was suddenly very interested in sorting her chocolates. It had to be from the blonde… No one at Shiz liked her enough to sneak into her room and hide a note for her. Galinda, as she was in the room all the time, was the only one who might have bothered.

The card that she withdrew from the envelope was clearly handmade - one of the hearts Galinda had been cutting out the night before. It was dripping with glitter, and Elphaba held it carefully with as few fingers as possible.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Elphie. Love, Galinda.

“You don’t like it,” Galinda said quietly, watching the green girl’s reaction.

“It’s just a little glittery for my tastes, that’s all. Thank you.” Elphaba smiled reassuringly at her. “Elphie?”

“I ran out of room for your name,” the blonde admitted.

“I kind of like it.”

“The card?”

“And the nickname.”

Galinda was absolutely beaming, and Elphaba couldn’t help reflecting some of her glow… This was so sweet, really. The blonde didn’t have to do anything for the roommate she scarcely tolerated, yet she had put as much effort into this card as any of the ones she had delivered to her more popular friends.

“Have you been enjoying your holiday?” Elphaba found herself asking, setting the book aside and turning to face Galinda.

“Well, it is snowing,” she replied. “And I do have chocolate.” Yet there was a hint of sadness in her eyes.

“But it’s not all you dreamed of, because you’re not in love.”

“I’m in love, I think,” Galinda murmured, “but the one I love didn’t even do so much as wish me a happy Valentine’s Day. I’d hoped today might be something special. My first kiss, maybe, or something along those lines.”

“If you, of all people, can’t get attention on Valentine’s Day, there’s no hope for the rest of us.”

Galinda picked up another chocolate, studying it as she thought about Elphaba’s words. “I’d rather hoped those flowers were from you and not Boq,” she said shyly, her voice scarcely more than a whisper.

Elphaba’s eyes widened, and the blonde avoided her gaze. Did that mean… Was Galinda in love with her? Her fervent blushing seemed to give away the answer, as did the wording of the glittery card, now that Elphaba read it again.

Love. Galinda hadn’t signed any of her other cards like that.

Elphaba shivered despite herself, setting down the card. She hadn’t even thought to get anything for her roommate… and now she had ruined the girl’s holiday. She wracked her brain for anything she could do at the last minute, but she was no good at making cards, and it was snowing too hard for a trip to a flower shop to be safe.

The green girl couldn’t figure out why she cared so much, why she wanted to fix things… But she suddenly could think of nothing else. Did she love Galinda, too? Was that even possible? Elphaba watched the blonde set her chocolate back in the box and bite her lip to prevent tears. That was when it really sunk in… Galinda loved her. Galinda loved her.

She loved Galinda.

She got off her bed hurriedly, making her way across the room to the blonde. “I’ve never done Valentine’s Day before… I wasn’t really sure what to do. I’m sorry.” When Galinda didn’t reply, Elphaba smiled as sweetly as she could. “Maybe… Maybe I can make it up to you.”

“How?” the blonde replied, her voice choked as she stared tearily into Elphaba’s eyes.

There was only one thing to do, Elphaba knew, one way to rescue the holiday. She leaned down, pressing her lips against Galinda’s lightly. That was all it was supposed to be, just a light hint of a kiss, but the blonde reached up to cup her hands around Elphaba’s head, pulling her closer, deepening the kiss. And Elphaba suddenly couldn’t imagine wanting to move away, leaning closer to Galinda and holding her as tightly as she could.

It seemed like an eternity before Galinda let her go and they looked at each other again. The blonde’s cheeks were quite red, and Elphaba couldn’t resist kissing the blonde again, briefly this time, before standing up again.

The green girl thought for quite awhile, searching for the right words to say as Galinda looked expectantly up at her. They finally occurred to her, and she reached down to stroke the blonde’s cheek, smiling widely. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Galinda.”
