--------
No one’s really keeping track on time, however Kyuhyun thinks it’s been 3 months. Been 3 months since he last let himself get wet from the heavy drops of rain, been 3 months since he cried with the rain, been 3 months since he last saw him. Now, he finds himself back to the basics.
His company was at risk of getting bankrupt but with the help of Hankyung and Yesung, they managed to stay back up. Gyuri was more active now than just working outside of the building and calling people to do the work for her. Ryeowook would still come by in his house and cook for him even when he hired his former maids back. Kibum would sometimes call to check if he reunited with Sungmin but would mostly end up with Kyuhyun hanging up.
The way he sees it, they were back to normal. And ofcourse, Kyuhyun too. But there was something much, much different.
Ryeowook opens the door slowly and sighs, frowning the moment he saw Kyuhyun still lying on the bed. His bed was messed up, his clothes were scattered on the floor and he was sleeping topless. Ryeowook didn’t like the fact that he drowns himself with alcohol every night. It’s just…wasn’t him.
“Kyuhyunnie…” Ryeowook calls, gently shaking his body but was returned with an annoyed moan. “Hyunnie, it’s almost noon, aren’t you going to work?” He asks softly, much a likely a mother’s concern that Kyuhyun hated.
“You sound like my mother…” Kyuhyun murmurs under his pillow. “I hate it, I hate her…”
“Don’t say that,” Ryeowook whispers, biting his lip, refusing to look at Kyuhyun on the eyes when he decided to peek from under his pillow. However, he failed to avoid a glimpse of those cold painful eyes. “It’s not her fault, everyone makes mistakes…you love your mother Kyuhyun,”
“I used to,”
“Kyu!”
“Go away, if you went here to lecture me like my mother, no thanks,”
Ryeowook shook his head and stood up exasperated. “Alright fine, I’ll go. You should at least be thankful someone still cares for you. I’m your best friend but all you do is shove me away, I can’t believe you!” He yells and the next thing Kyuhyun heard was a door being slammed.
“Really…! Argh, that brat!-oh,” Ryeowook stopped the moment he saw a very familiar face inside the house. “Seohyun?”
Seohyun turned to him and smiled. She smiled…it freaked him out. “Oh, Ryeowook, long time no see,”
“Are you sick?”
Seohyun frowned. “Dammit! Why is it hard to be nice?!”
“I guess you weren’t born nice,”
“Anyway, I came here to see Kyu,”
“Why?”
“Do you have to ask? Hello?? Ever heard of privacy?” Seohyun asks mockingly.
“He’s not in good condition,”
“That’s better,” She says as she continues walking, swaying her hips. Ryeowook doesn’t know why but he felt like he doesn’t need to stop her. I guess it’s something bound to happen.
“GET YOUR ASS UP KYUHYUN!” Seohyun yells after slamming the door, almost breaking it, and then she kicks the bottles as she walked over.
“Oh God, what are you doing here? You have no right to visit me because you ruined my life,”
“Yes, blame it on me, you idiot. You should be grateful I stopped after that. I realized I like someone else,”
“No you don’t,”
“I do, his name is Yesung,”
“I’M STILL HERE YOU KNOW!” Ryeowook yells behind the door.
“Stop eavesdropping…it’s not Yesung, it’s someone else,”
“Kibum…”
Seohyun gasps then pulled the pillow Kyuhyun’s using to cover his face. “How did you know?!”
“Wild guess,”
“Geez,” Seohyun says as she throws the pillow on the floor. “I was expecting you to be looking for him…not drown yourself with alcohol,” She said, a bit serious now. Kyuhyun turned his attention to the ceiling and sighs. “I can tell you where he is,”
“You don’t have to…I have no intention in chasing him…”
“Why?”
“I’m not worth it. Who knew blood could cause so much trouble?”
“Coward,”
“It’s nice to be one once in a while,”
“You should go after him,”
“It’s still gonna be the same. He’ll say the same things over and over again. I don’t want to hear it anymore,” He said, slowly closing his eyes.
“And I was so amazed with you all these months. I almost thought you were willing to kill me because of him. I’ve always thought you love him so much…you wouldn’t believe me if I told you I came back to know how much you love him…and I didn’t know about this whole matter,”
“You didn’t?”
Seohyun shook her head. “I didn’t. I made everything worse, sorry,”
“Even if you did nothing, he will still run away from me, because I’m his brother…”
“Wouldn’t that be so much easier for you? If everyone assumes you two are brothers then they won’t have to be confused about your skinship,” Seohyun tried to lighten him up.
“Your way of thinking…really…”
Seohyun stared at him for a long moment. “I feel so sick trying to help you…”
“About time,”
“Well, whatever, if you don’t go after him I’ll tell the press where he is,”
Kyuhyun opened his eyes but made no move. “You wouldn’t,”
“You know me…” She replied with a smirk. She sighed and tried to convince Kyuhyun one more time. When she happens to receive the same answers, she stood up and decided to leave. She smiled at Ryeowook at the door and didn’t say a word when she started to walk away.
Kyuhyun stayed there soon after the door was slowly closed. He stared at the ceiling, the empty ceiling and wondered if this was what his mom wanted. He remembered everything about her. What bothers him is about Sungmin being his brother. He crooked his eyebrows as he tries to think deeper.
Then it came to him. All so sudden.
“Kyu, keep this okay?” He remembers his mother telling him when he was 5 years old. It was that same necklace but it was the other half of Sungmin’s. “This is your brother’s,”
“Where is he?”
“He’s up there,” He remembers his mom looking up, pointing at the sky. “He’s watching you,”
“So he’s dead,” He couldn’t help but smile as he remembered how blunt he was.
His mother was also smiling at him. “Yes,”
He’s dead. How could I forget that?
“Where’s the other half, umma?”
“He has it,” She smiles at him. He remembers that moment, the wind was blowing hard and it brushes to their skin. It was so cold but the sun was so warm and he hadn’t known he was standing in front of his brother’s grave. He couldn’t remember where it was.
“She can’t be lying…” He whispers to himself. After a long pause, he stood up immediately, stopping as soon as he felt his head aching. Then he jumped off of his bed, quickly grabbing some newly-washed clothes and putting on a pair of jeans. He ran out of the room and stopped when he caught a glimpse of Ryeowook leaning on the window.
Not long after that, Ryeowook turned around, slightly surprised at him. “Kyu?”
Kyuhyun walked over him. “Wookie, do you know the hospital where I was born?”
“Y-yeah...I heard it from my mom…”
“Where???”
“Somewhere in Incheon…I think,”
“Thanks Ryeowook!” He yells, completely surprising Ryeowook when he kissed his forehead and ran away again.”I wonder if I missed anything…” He tells himself, blinking and obviously clueless.
On the way to the car, Kyuhyun’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID, seeing it was Gyuri, he knew he had to answer. “Yeah?”
“Where the heck are you?! The meeting’s starting in an hour!”
Meeting? Oh fuck. “Yeah..u-um…I’ll be there soon, I’ll just have to visit someone,”
“You better!”
He hangs up as he went inside the car, starting the engine and driving out as soon as possible.
“Achoo!” Sungmin sneezes and he rubs his arms at the coldness. “I didn’t know it would be this cold here during winter…” He says to himself. “It’s almost Christmas…” He smiles at the Christmas tree he was decorating. It feels so peaceful here. He thought. He lifted his hand and touched his neck, and he frowned when he realized his necklace isn’t there anymore. It was the same for three months. He couldn’t seem to get used to his necklace being separated from him.
“Oppa!” His thoughts were then interrupted by Hyun Young, one of the children he’s taking care of at the orphanage.
“What is it, Hyun Young?” He asks her gently.
Hyun Young smiled at him and she showed her small palms to him where he was holding a picture. Sungmin, being too tall for the little girl, bent down and took the photo from her hands. He frowned a bit but he can’t show it to Hyun Young and so he smiles at her.
He looks at the picture again. That one picture Seohyun took. He realized how long it has been already, three months. This picture, this was where it all started.
Hyun Young blinked at him and she touches Sungmin’s cheeks the moment she saw tears falling down. “Oppa, you’re crying!” She says worriedly. “Oppa…”
Sungmin paused and wiped his face, smiling fakely. “Ah...It’s just dusts Hyun Young, oppa’s not crying…” He tried to convince her but she’s too smart to be fooled.
“When oppa is sad…oppa should think of happy thoughts!” She yells with her tiny voice and made Sungmin smile a little.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Sungmin nods. “Happy thoughts…” He says, close to tears. It wasn’t helping at all. Happy thoughts made it even worse.
“Oppa, you can borrow Kitty so you won’t be sad anymore,” She says, smiling innocently as she shoves her bunny in front of Sungmin.
Sungmin took it without a word and was silent even until Hyun Young went back playing. “Kitty huh?”
“Stupid Kitty,” He suddenly remembers Kyuhyun.
“STUPID, UGLY, IDIOT, CHO KYUHYUN!” He yells while punching the stuffed kitty. “YOU STUBBORN…ARROGANT…SNARKY BRAT! I HATE YOU SO MUCH!”
“Yah!”
“Huh? Oh, Seohyun…”
“Do you plan on ruining the girl’s toy?” She asks. When Sungmin wouldn’t reply, she continued on. “Anyway, someone’s here with me looking for you,” She said as she gestures someone at the door. Two guys came in, two familiar guys.
“Ah! The nurses!” He jumped up as he recognized them.
“Oh he remembered us!” One of them said.
“Why are you here?”
“Umm…you see…this,” They said in unison, giving Sungmin a birth certificate.
Okay here’s the story. It was a birth certificate. Not just a birth certificate, but Sungmin’s birth certificate. So here, his mom’s name is different. Yes, different. Just where the hell did the name Han Sunmi come from? Her twin. Her twin for God’s sakes. She has a twin. Han Sunha has a twin named Han Sunmi. Great.
“OH MY GOD! I HATE YOU TWO!!! DON’T YOU KNOW WHAT I WENT THROUGH BECAUSE OF THIS?!!!” Sungmin yells fiercely while hitting both of them with the folder. “JUST…WHAT THE HECK?!” He yells again, close to crying.
“Um you see…the doctor saw the records and he remembered that there was a name he wrote wrongly…because he thought the other was Sunha and the other was Sunmi…but he ended up writing two Han Sunha and-“
“YOU IDIOTS! HOW COULD YOU LET THAT HAPPEN?! OH MY GOD…YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO ME BECAUSE OF THIS! NOW I’LL BE ALONE FOR CHRISTMAS BECAUSE OF YOU!!!” He yells angrily in between sobs. Seohyun found it amusing but she had to interrupt.
“Don’t blame these nurses. Blame yourself for giving up so easily. Geez,” She says, crossing her arms.
Sungmin looked at her and paused for a moment. “Oh…I forgot you’re here,”
“…YOU!”
“What’re your names?” He asks the nurses, completely ignoring that fact that Seohyun is ready to fire more smoke out of her nose.
“Huh?”
“Both of you,”
“I-I’m Minho…and this is Taemin,” One of the two, the taller one, replied, pulling Taemin close and then smiles.
Sungmin stared at them, thinking if they were brothers. Well anyway, “Weird names,” he told them.
Kyuhyun arrived at Incheon by noon. He went to the hospital Kibum told him and immediately looking for the nurses or someone that could help him. It was a busy day, he looks around and it seemed like no one in their right mind would listen to his story and help him because yeah, it is a busy day.
Just when he thought he lost his luck, he bumped into an old man. No wait, he’s a doctor. “Well well well young man, are you lost by any chance?” He asks, and chuckles. Kyuhyun can’t seem to determine if he was smiling or sleeping because…he couldn’t see his eyes.
“Doctor, can you help me?”
“Sure, anything for Cho Kyuhyun,” He replies and chuckles again.
“You know me? Oh why am I shocked, I’m that famous.” He says. “Anyway doctor, can you help me look at the death records here…I mean…you see I have a brother and he was also born here and…I just wanted to confirm if-“
“You don’t need to worry. Your real brother is dead.”
“Huh? Wait, how-“
“I’m your mother’s friend…she told me everything before she adopted…Sungmin,”
Kyuhyun couldn’t move, he couldn’t even react. What the hell is happening?
“Your mother loved Jiwon…her twin’s husband,”
“Twin? What twin?”
“Your mother has a twin, Sunmi…she died even before you were born,” The doctor said. “They were really close, they both wanted to become doctors someday that’s why they always came here back then,” The old doctor continued, looking at nothing. “That is how they met Jiwon, Jiwon was also an aspiring doctor but he ended up being a nurse because of financial problems…I took care of the three of them whenever they’re here, they can do anything they want,”
“They were really happy back then, talking about their dreams and all,”
“Sunmi, if I became a doctor, I’ll hire Jiwon as my nurse!” Sunha said while chewing some chips Jiwon has given them inside the doctor’s office.
“But…I’m gonna be a doctor too…I’m sure Jiwon will choose me,” Sunmin replied shyly.
Sunha glared at her and then turned to Jiwon. “Jiwon-ah, who are you going to choose?”
Jiwon looked away from the records he’s been working on and turned to them, smiling. “I’m sure you two will end up in the same hospital anyway,”
“That’s right! Sunha, we’re going to be in the same hospital!” Sunmi announced cheerfully with Sunha returning it with a fake smile.
“But then their parents won’t let them pursue their dreams, let alone be friends with Jiwon, their parents even arrived to locking the both of them, I knew it was too painful for them so I chose to help them even though it meant betraying their parents,” The old doctor said then paused. “Being their family doctor helped a lot…”
“You’re only going there for a checkup, if I found out you ran away, I’m gonna have to tie you inside the room, you hear me?” Their mother told them and they only nodded, not even bothering to look at her.
“JIWON-AH!” They yelled in unison when they arrived at the clinic. Ofcourse, Jiwon felt happier seeing them smiling.
“Are you two alright?” He asks as the two smiles at him. “Sunmi, you’re not hurt right?” And right then, Sunha frowned at the feeling of something between them.
“Sunha, he only asked me because of my asthma,” Sunmi explained to her later when they were left inside the clinic.
“Yeah right…” Sunha replied, snobbing. Sunmi was even hurt seeing her sister jealous of her like that.
“Sunha was more of the aggressive and loud type while Sunmi was the opposite, totally quiet and soft…I think her asthma was also one of the reasons why she isn’t as sporty as her sister…but in terms of intelligence, Sunmi was superior to Sunha,” The doctor said. They were sitting at a bench now, looking at the people passing by in front of them.
“She ran away huh…” Sunha whispered at midnight when she was woken up by her sister’s noise. When she got up, her sister wasn’t in her bed; instead she was slowly running outside and, guess who’s waiting for her? Jiwon.
“As I expected…” She said with a sad face.
“She ran away with Jiwon…Sunha hated both of them for that, so she told her parents where Jiwon lives and they burnt his house, they’re lucky both of them weren’t inside. Sunha didn’t even know why she ran away with him…but then the time Sunmi knew did that because of jealousy…”
“I think it was almost one year when Sunha came asking where Jiwon and Sunmi lives…Jiwon asked me not to tell her because he was scared of what she’ll do again…but Sunmi couldn’t leave her sister worrying like that,”
“You were pregnant?!” Sunha asks shockingly, that night Sunmi asked her to meet. “What the…”
Sunmi looked at her, pitiful. “I’m sorry…”
“With him?!” Sunmi nods. “You…you knew I loved him! You’re so selfish!” She yells at her and slaps her so hard Sunmi almost lost her balance. “I thought you ran away because you don’t like the way our parents treat us…and you left me, I was so mad…but you were pregnant?! You didn’t even tell me! I hate you! I can’t believe how selfish you are! I wish you were never my sister!!!”
“Sunha!” Sunmi yelled running after her sister when she ran suddenly. It hasn’t been a mile when she stopped, not like she wanted to but she can’t run anymore and she didn’t know why she has to fall on the ground at this time. “I can’t breathe…”
Sunha turned around and saw her sister on the ground, looking so desperate grasping for air. “Sunmi!” She yelled as she ran to her quickly, turning her body around, letting her head rest on her lap. “What’s wrong?! Sunmi!”
“I…can’t…I can’t breathe…Sunha…” She says in between pants.
“Hold on!” She told her as she searches her pockets for her inhaler. “Damn it! Where’s your inhaler?!” She asks annoyed. When Sunmi couldn’t answer, she didn’t ask anymore, instead she took Sunmi’s phone and called Jiwon.
“Jiwon-ah!”
“Sunha?!”
“I don’t have time to explain! Sunmi can’t breathe! She’s dying in the middle of the road! You hear me?!” She yelled fiercely then threw her cellphone away when she hung up. “Hold on Sunmi!”
“It’s okay…” She whispers and slowly her hands reached to her neck and pulled the necklace. “Take care of him…”
“What?” She asks but Sunmi just smiled at her. “Sunmi?” She called out when Sunmi looked like she wanted to sleep. “Sunmi! Yah!” She yells and wouldn’t stop until Jiwon arrived that night.
“It was so sad…Sunha wasn’t cheerful anymore after that…she left Jiwon alone, and she agreed to marry someone she doesn’t like, someone her parents arranged for her, Kyujong, your father,” The doctor started again. They were already inside a coffee shop since he complained that he needs to drink coffee. “She has been ignoring that since she met Jiwon but she didn’t have any choice but to agree. She never mentioned Sunmi’s name ever again after that because she feels guilty about her death…she left a son too,”
“When she found out about Sunmi’s son she wanted to adopt him,”
Son? Sunmi’s son? Kyuhyun thought. Could it be Sungmin?
“But then she realized that her parents doesn’t know Sunmi had a son…he wasn’t also safe with Jiwon though because her parents are hunting him for what happened to Sunmi so she decided that Jiwon take his son to her and she’ll find a way to make his son live a happy life,”
“They succeeded in that, since at that time Kyujong went abroad and they have their own house. She’s been keeping him inside their house. She treated him like her own child because she couldn’t recover from the lost of her baby that time,”
“What’s his name? Sunmi-shii’s son…”
The doctor looked at me with that I-know-you-know look. “Sungmin,”
I knew it. He thought with a bit of relief.
