[drabble] The Way You Say It: Ed/Alfonz

Nov 10, 2006 18:21

Despite contradicting evidence, I really am dead. Seriously. Hopefully this won’t last too much longer, but here’s this week’s Tuesday, posted late Friday.
I owe people comments.

The Way You Say It
FMA, pre-movie
Ed/Alfonz
UST. Pre-movie.
262 words.

Edward hates the word “religion”.

It’s not that he hates religion itself (much), it’s just the way other people use it. The almighty righteous way they pronounce it, right before they start spitting fury and Ed has to count to 10 carefully so he doesn’t kill anyone. Messily.

Unless it’s Alphonse. Alfonz. The different spelling’s important, and Ed wishes he didn’t forget it as often as he does.

But Alfonz can say the word right-in English or German or Cantonese. He’s a little fascinated by Buddhist reincarnation and Hindu enlightenment and Allah, and shows Ed around the university library’s selection of Religious Theory with gusto.

Alfonz is Christian. Edward is trying not to say, with difficulty, anything. It’s harder and easier than it sounds.

In the back of his head, he knows he was never quite this considerate with Alphonse, never this secretive.

Alphonse would say that it was important to respect others’ beliefs, and that alchemy and science wasn’t the answer for everything. Edward would say that he’s never seen a bigger pile of garbage before in his life.

Alfonz can use words like “God” and “salvation” and “purity” with a straight face. He can enunciate the words with respect, and sometimes with genuine emotion, piety. He can also pronounce them in a way that makes Ed wish (almost) that he felt the same.

Because when Alfonz does say them, he almost looks-

And then Alfonz will look at him with eyes that have never been too badly hurt, horrified, never been bruised, and Edward wants to hit himself again.
