Capture a God
Avatar: The Last Airbender
PG
Slight Zukko/Aang.
I...don't write Avatar slash. But I did. I don't write AVATAR. But I did. AU. Short.

For 15minuteficlets' challenge:

In another 10 hours (less than a day, less than a day to go) he'd regain his birthright. He'd regain his title, his name, his place in the universe and everything...would be right in the world. Everything.

(Zuko never forgot the irony of capturing the Avatar; promising to save (and he had) the two Watertribe allies in return for the boy's cooperation, the price of caring for the welfare of others weaker was always the loss of one's own).

From the ship's stern he could smell the smoke of the Fire Nation's forges, its many factories. Most of those forges were building weapons, tanks and armor against the Earth Nation. Once, he'd enjoyed the smell of smoke, had been comforted by it like the ticking of a clock, but now it...

It did nothing.

(It'd taken the boy (Aang, memory remembered) several days to adapt on the ship, several more days to adapt to the crew. Iroh had won the Avatar over surprisingly fast, but Zuko hadn't been surprised; Iroh could win over a acid-spitting five-headed monster, winning over one lonely bald 14 year old god was hardly a challenge. All Iroh had to do was beat the boy in Pai Shao, and never let him win.)

The hairs on the back of his neck rose; Zuko ignored it. In a few days, it would all be right. Everything would be...right.

Iroh and the Avatar were the only ones brave enough to confront him when he was moody. Fingers not his own tapped idly on the railing a few feet down from him. He ignored it.

(He'd watched Iroh teach the boy (Aang) Fire-bending. That had been painful. Like watching his own training replayed. Watching the boy watch him had been...equally strange. He'd captured a God, and that god liked to play. And watch him. And talk. And hang off the railing in a storm, laughing with the lightening while the rest of the crew went wild battening the hatches and keeping the vessel safe.)

"So."

Zuko ignored it.

Iroh and the Avatar (Aang) were the only ones brave enough to spar with him.

"I guess...you're glad to be going back."

The Avatar was the only one brave (suicidal, crazy) enough to treat him as an equal.

Zuko ignored it.

He'd captured a God, and all it had cost him was two years, toil, tear, and the loss of...something.

"No. Not really."

...And here I was going to write NejiNaru 00

drabble, avatar, aang, zuko
