Also, you can be lucky that you already have a biometrical passport and can go to the U.S. without visa. I don't (okay, I chose not to get one, because I think it's scary to know that my most personal details might be stored in one central database somewhere in Berne). Which means that if I wanted to fly to the U.S., I would need to apply for a visa, which loses you at least half a day at the embassy for total pointless forms, interviews and stuff. (A friend of mine told me his story. It was quite scary.)
Btw. it's only the U.S., I've recently applied for Visa for such countries as China or Russia and I was actually surprised how swift and easy it all went. (Well, visa extension in Russia was a different story, but that was just a question of deadlines and it worked out in the end.)
Oh - but we shouldn't complain too much. I know Russians and other non-westerners who have tried to apply for Schengen-Visa and THAT's when it gets really hard.
