fourth of july's are one of my favorite holidays. people here sometimes mistake that for patriotism. it is not, my friends, patriotism. the fourth of july is a holiday that is celebrated whether or not you are patriotic, sort of like if you celebrate christmas, partake in gift giving, going to massive christmas diners with families, even if you don't believe in god.

i miss the fireworks, the parades, the bbq's, the cabin, the drunkeness, the medallion hunt, the community feeling.

it may be only where i grew up, in the suburbs of minneapolis, that make such a fuss over it, but it was nice. i liked it. and being in a different country on this day just feels weird. it feels strange that no one is all "HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!"

i've said happy fourth of july to many people today. everyone at work was all, "oh, yeah right, your american. but i thought you weren't patriotic..."

and to that i say, "oh, no, i'm not." and then i turn around to go do some work.
