And by "these people" I mean "some Lost fans" (because I wouldn't want to generalize!). XD
So, basically there's one more episode of Lost before the big 2.5 hours finale, and in last night's ep, the shit hit the fan.
So anyway, there were main character deaths. Sayid took one for the team and died heroically... and well, Sayid, from the start has been That Tortured Character Who Everyone Knows Will End Up Dead, so no surprises. And then not 5 minutes later, Sun and Jin died together. She was trapped by heavy unmoveable objects in a sinking submarine, and when he couldn't get her free, Jin chose to stay and die with her rather than save himself. Oh, and they'd been reunited just last episode after AGES apart. So yes, it was sad, but it was one of those sad endings that in my opinion just FIT. Much like "Let's go catch that light that exists only for us.", to name one example.
My point being, it's one of those cases where I think "happy ending" loses all meaning, because these particular characters went out on their own terms and I think that they were obviously content to have been reunited and to die together.
And on another level, I always have to applaud writers that have the guts to kill off fan favorites.
But anyway, here's a comment from the TWOP forums:
That may have been the biggest "F.U." to fans in the history of television. They kill two characters that deserved a happy ending and they break Hurley completely. He just watched the last three people he was really close to on the island die. The only small measure of satisfaction is that Sayid went out like a hero. That was soul crushing.
Okay then. :D
First of all, that was neither soul-crushing nor a "F.U." to fans. Second of all, I can't help wondering how someone like this would react to, oh, having a sweetheart main character killed off in a random, meaningless battle in the second to last episode, to use a TOTALLY random example.
No characters are OWED a happy ending, no matter how much the fandom is rooting for them. And the fact that these people are having hissyfits because of it is... really amusing.
