Yet more Tsukasa/Natsumi \:D/
It was the hardest one to write so far, but I hope you guys like it?
The first time he spent the night in Natsumi's room, Tsukasa fell asleep sitting on the floor by her bed, with his arms and head resting on the mattress. They'd brought her home from the hospital that afternoon, and although she was fine, Tsukasa was very conscious that she had not been fine just a little while ago, and he still remembered how it felt, thinking he'd never see her smile again.
And so, that night, when he left Yusuke and his talk about how he should tell her what had really happened to her and how he had saved her life, Tsukasa had stood outside the half-open door of the bedroom he and Yusuke shared, thinking about Natsumi's smile, and about how dark the world had seemed when it had had to go without it briefly. And instead of going inside their room, Tsukasa had turned around, crossed the hall, and knocked on Natsumi's door.
She opened the door, eyes widening a little when she saw him because in all the time since he'd effectively moved into the studio, he'd never come knocking on her bedroom door after she was ready for bed.
"Natsumikan," he said casually. "Can I come in?"
She nodded and stepped aside, holding the door for him. He came in and stood, arms crossed, while she closed the door and leaned back against it, arms behind her back. He got the distinct feeling she didn't know what to do with herself, and it almost made him smile in satisfaction. He'd just hate it if she was at ease when he wasn't.
"Tsukasa-kun, are you going to just stand there, or was there something you wanted?" She asked after a minute or so, a smile finally ghosting across her lips.
He cleared his throat, then strode over and sat on her bed, crossing one leg over the other casually, for all the world as if he hadn't been caught off-guard.
Natsumi's eyes sparkled in amusement, as if to say he wasn't fooling her.
"I just thought I should check on how you're feeling," he said easily, ignoring her sparkling eyes and her smile and the fact that he was sitting on her bed and the little voice in his head that kept pointing out all these details.
"I'm okay. I told you guys, I feel fine. But thank you for checking."
"You're sure?"
"Yes, I really am."
There was a pause then, as if both knew there was more to say but neither knew quite how. Finally Tsukasa pushed himself up off Natsumi's bed.
"All right then, I'll just let you go to bed then," he said as he moved towards the door.
"Tsukasa-kun... thank you," she said as he passed by her. He smiled a little in reply, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.
He stopped at the threshold. He didn't look back at her as he spoke.
"Natsumikan... it's okay to be scared. You can tell me if you want."
"Tsukasa-kun, don't worry, I'm not..."
"I understand. I can stay with you if you don't want to be alone."
"You... what?"
He flicked his eyes over at her for a moment. Her eyes were wide and a little incredulous and he wondered if he saw a hint of a blush.
Obviously it meant he was right. She didn't want to be alone but wouldn't have said anything herself.
"I'll stay here with you if you need me to," he said and as her eyes widened even more, he hurried to add "Just lend me a pillow, I can sleep on the floor."
"Tsukasa-kun... I don't... I mean..."
He huffed out a breath. Clearly he shouldn't have said anything.
"Never mind, Natsumikan. I'll be across the hall if you need anything."
He was out in the hall and pulling the door closed behind him when he felt her hand circle his wrist. He stopped and glanced back in surprise.
"Tsukasa-kun, I think... you're right. I don't really want to be alone."
He sighed and shook his head, putting on a put upon expression. "I'll have a backache from sleeping on that hard floor tomorrow. I hope you appreciate what I do for you, Natsumikan."
"Don't pout, Tsukasa-kun, you're the one that suggested it," she replied, pouting herself and tightening her hold on his wrist to pull him back inside while Tsukasa ducked his head to hide a small smile.
And so Tsukasa found himself sitting on the floor by Natsumi's bed, wrapped in a blanket with a pillow on his lap, while Natsumi curled up under her covers facing him. The covers were drawn up around her shoulders and her hair fell her pillow and over the blankets. He could have just reached out and touched it, but he didn't. Instead he poked at the pillow in his lap idly, and they talked for awhile, about inconsequential things, without mentioning their journey, or destroyers of worlds, or what had happened to Natsumi. They laughed about Yusuke's behaviour back in the hospital, and eventually, when their conversation was dying down and they were starting to nod off, Natsumi reached out her hand for Tsukasa's. She squeezed his hand and smiled sleepily.
"I do appreciate it, Tsukasa-kun," she said.
He didn't reply, and he didn't say anything more after that, but he turned his hand in hers to thread their fingers together and watched as she fell asleep.
He woke up the next morning with the pillow still in his lap, his head resting awkwadly on the matress, and a terrible ache in his neck. He was a little surprised to find that his hand still holding hers.
