The last thing I EVER expected was to come to have... sympathy? respect? anything other than dislike for Hojou. And it's certainly not like with Kusaka, where after hating him the whole series suddenly at the end I kinda loved him. I still don't LIKE Hojou. But I guess I understand him, and I respect the character for what he is and for what he stands for (I suppose that's the best way to put it).
Really, the moment I realized that was... well, when he saw that Hikawa had trouble seeing, I expected him to use the knowledge to try to sabotage the G3 unit (and it's still possible he might, because he's Hojou). Instead, when Hikawa goes to have his eyes examined, the person with him is Hojou. In a way the last person one would expect, but in another, the only person it COULD be.
After everything is said and done, Hojou and Hikawa aren't friends, but they're... brothers in arms, I suppose is the best way to put it. They're both policemen for much the same reasons, they both want to protect people however they are able to, and in spite of the fact that they use VERY different means to do it, that scene makes it very obvious that they not only understand that, but that they respect each other for it. Hikawa chose Hojou as the one person he could trust with his problem (it doesn't matter if Hojou figured it out, Hikawa could have blown him off and gone alone), and Hojou... well, first of all, he appears to be genuinely concerned for Hikawa, but above that, he understands and respects Hikawa's choice to hide the problem for the sake of keeping on fighting.
Anyway, I think it's really awesome the way that particular relationship has developed, it's very subtle, and just, what it's become, that silent but very strong sense of mutual respect between the two, it's just very interesting. And it makes Hojou, if not more likeable, at least more palatable.
And then Hojou goes and acts as Hikawa's eyes. That was awesome. *_*
And as for Hikawa himself, with the whole "I have to keep fighting no matter what, it doesn't matter what happens to me".... ;_________;
Damn. Even more so than before he's exactly THAT type of character that I love to bits. And the scene after Shouichi's power is taken, when all the others are standing around talking about it, and he shows up and he has no idea what happened or why, and he doesn't actually say it, but you just KNOW what he's thinking, that it doesn't matter where Agito's power comes from or what it is, what matters is how you use it, and he would give anything to have power and be able to use it to protect people, and Shouichi... gave it up. Damn. He must have been so disappointed and probably angry too.
ETA2:
dimmie, I get what you meant now about Shouichi kicking god in the face. DAMN. Awesome. XDDD
