some smug person for prop 8 said he welcomed obama supporters, even if they voted against mccain because people of color were so in favor of prop 8 that it ended up being a net gain for his cause. that is exactly what i was afraid of, as i saw no on 8 supporters in weho and silverlake--but nowhere to be found in rosemead.

we did a really poor job of communicating to families and communities of color who might vote for obama but see no reason to support queers. lots of work to be done--but it also reveals one of the ongoing problems in the lgbt political community. it just doesn't seem to understand how irrelevant it is in monterey park or westminster. the many POC families do not listen to npr and are more likely to watch tbn than pbs.

even worse, it doesn't seem to understand the vicious homophobia a family can have--even one that seems progressive on education, economic, or race issues.

homophobia binds these communities, and only when there is a sustained, compassionate, and public lgbt presence within these communities will you see some of the bonds start to loosen. for a queer of color, it can be so awful--as white queers accuse you of being not as committed as they are and some families are just (i'm sorry for the expression) so fucking ignorant you just want to cry.
