In this sequel to Army of Two, you reprise your roles as one of the two in the aforementioned Army. Look, I'll be frank with you. I never played the first one, but I now have every intention of playing the first game since this second one was mildly enjoyable. I say mildly enjoyable because the game was all about going around and shooting stuff as if you were in a 1980s action film where to mercenaries can outwit hundreds if not thousands of PMC troops.
The game is meant to be played by two people; however, I sincerely doubt it's meant to be played split-screen. In a rare move, Ronnie tried to play as the second player through the very first level. That lasted about 15 minutes before he got frustrated at how confusing split-screen made things. Sadly, with no PS3 friends, I would have had to of joined a random, public game. This would have made baby Jesus cry, as well as whoever the system deemed unlucky enough to have join me.
It's a fun title, the controls aren't half bad, the action is constant, and at times the odds do seem somewhat insurmountable. However, it's actually fun at times. Then there are times when it's not as fun as it should be. Like, for example, during one of the "morality moments" the game has where you can save civilians. The strategies for saving the civilians aren't always apparent and the mechanics via which you control your partner don't necessarily account for the complexities of the plan you might have in mind. As long as you don't mind being a cutthroat mercenary, you're fine. But if you want to be a good guy, you're in for some frustration, which is only compounded by the fact you cannot just repeat the botched attempt; rather, you end up having to start from the checkpoint, which is not always just before the attempt's start point.
I'd say this one's good for another play-through, and I'm likely going to do that before I return it. Definitely one to be checked out. I hope the first installment is as good as the sequel.
Okay, fine. I know. There has to be SOMETHING worth bitching about a bit more than the morality checkpoints, right? Well, let's face it, the game is a lot about repetition. You're mercenaries and you have to shoot stuff, more stuff comes out and you have to shoot it. Every so often you have to shoot something from behind. It's a lot of rinse and repeat, but I guess that's every game under the sun.
The money system in the game isn't half bad. You get money, you buy guns, you buy upgrades to guns to customize them. You make enough money to expand your arsenal quite a bit. However, there aren't really that many guns that are clear and remarkable upgrades over others, so you'll not be sporting a lot of different weapons. Well, you might if you like to do that sort of thing. Some upgrades are just for shits and giggles like the $100,000 diamond encrusted grenades and the pimp paint job for your gun (makes it gold).
Anything else? Not really. So try it.
