They could have gone with the date that Britain decided thirteen of their North American colonies had been a money-draining pain in the arse long enough and officially recognized them as an independent and separate entity, and we'd be celebrating what happened on September 3, 1788 instead of July 4, 1776. I rather prefer the summer holiday myself, though early September isn't anything to wrinkle your nose over. ;)
