Summary: The Duck Man, before and after he became a beggar.
Before he was the Duck Man, he was someone else.
He recalls bits...like restaurants filled with savoury food. Some sleet-filled nights, he wistfully dreams of a bed with goose-feather pillows and warm quilts, but he's uncertain if that's memory or fantasy.
He dislikes recollecting. In those days, he was being sucked into a whirlpool that no one else could see.
He begged for help, and got righteous lectures instead.
He drowned.
And nobody cared.
Arnold Sideways, Coffin Henry and Ron care.
He senses that he could recover.
But if he must choose between sanity and friendship, sanity can go hang.
