13 Gifts for 13 Gardeners by Tulip Proudfoot
About Sam Gamgee's thirteen children, now grown-up, and the gifts and letters their Uncle Frodo left them. The Frodo who emerges from the letters is very definitely the one I recognize from Tolkien's work. The story is sweet, funny in some parts and sad in others. I can believe that this could have happened in Tolkien's world.
Where The Shadows Lie by Robin4 (who also writes as Robin at the SugarQuill and Checkmated.com, and as RobinLady at FictionAlley/Schnoogle)
This is an AU, but it is one that makes sense within the framework of the story. In this universe, Frodo decides to go with the Fellowship to Minas Tirith, instead of heading off toward Mordor with Sam. This one decision changes the entire outcome of the War of the Ring. The characters are believably themselves, though with certain differences because their experiences haven't been identical. I'd like to nailgun this to the wall of every fangirl to show her an example of a well-written, believable alternate universe that COULD have happened.
