So here's what LJ is doing about the Facebook stuff. I clicked on the Share This! on one of my recent posts on LJ. This button cannot be turned off, by the way. Let me repeat that. It cannot be turned off. I've tried.
These are the top options for "sharing with friends." Not all of them. Oh, no. Just the most popular ones.
* E-mail
* Facebook
* Twitter
* Google Buzz
* Blogger
* MySpace
* Digg
* AIM Share
* Stumbleupon
* Messenger
There is then a button which says Show All. Click on that and you get the following options:

Yeah. I can see that the whole "10,000 people talking to LJ staff" worked SO well. Instead of two options for crossposting, there are now FIFTY.
And as I said, the "privacy/opt-out" button does not work. "Share This" does not disappear from a post when you push it. It does not disappear from other posts, either. It just keeps on showing up on every post--with the same fifty options.
Under that is a link that says, "What are your friends sharing?" Click on it and you get taken to ShareThis, which will tell you exactly what your friends are sharing about your LJ. You can't see what your friends are sharing to other services, though. So either you have to join ShareThis or sign in using Google, Yahoo, Twitter or Facebook.
Can you share other people's posts? Yep. I checked. The "Share This" option shows up on the public posts of all of my friends as well. I could "share" anything they said. (Think about the fact that people can friend you randomly, too. Someone may not be on your f-list, but they can still "share.")
Fifty different places to cross-post. Available to you and to every single person on your f-list. For every single public post you make or have ever made on LJ.
Think about it.
P.S. Dreamwidth also has a "Share This Entry" option. It does not, however, link to every single place to crosspost. I find that reassuring.
P.P.S. So far, this post has gotten four spammers. Nice.
