Day 15 - Favorite female character.

Again, a tough one, because I have a lot of favorite female characters--most, I note, in science fiction and fantasy shows. Listing them in alphabetical order:

1) Abby Sciuto, from NCIS.

Tara is one of the only characters I can think of who is shy but not a) a supergenius crimefighter with a schizophrenic mother and no social skills (and I love those guys, but variety, people!), b) a coward and a traitor, or c) comic relief. Or all of the above, I suppose. She's more like actual shy, slightly awkward people I meet all the time. I love that.

My own faves include Faith Lehane, from BTVS, and Calleigh Duquesne from CSI: Miami.

Ah, Calleigh...blonde, brainy, beautiful and a fellow firearm enthusiast! Add "book nerd" and "SF fan" to the list, and I'd be about ready to propose! Not that I'd get anywhere, but still...

I've never seen CSI: Miami, so I don't know Calleigh. She sounds like a great character, though!

Ha. Tessa was another of my 'screw this, I'm leaving' stupid death stories. Kill off a character I like and I walk. It gets easy... And I don't care that the actress wanted to leave; there were other ways to writer her out. In this case, l would have loved to see Tessa find a nice, normal, mortal guy who didn't have to deal with decapitation-crazed immortals every week... Yeah, Duncan was hot, but he's not the kind of guy you could settle down with. But of course no woman would ever leave him, except feet-first... Faugh.

When Elisabeth Sladen was scheduled to leave Doctor Who, the writer came up with a story involving Sarah Jane's death and the Foreign Legion--and Sladen refused point blank. She said she did NOT want her exit to involve marriage or death. She wanted Sarah Jane to slip away at the end very quietly and NOT make the entire story about her departure ( ... )

I'm tired of "kill the woman" being the default program. It's part and parcel of the mysogyny in human culture, and it's damned poor writing.

I agree. It is. It happens far too often in fiction, too.

Frankly, I think that walking away from Duncan makes a LOT more sense. They even set up the situation to make that possible; it was emphasized time and again that Tessa was in a tenuous position as far as physical safety and emotional security went. I don't doubt that she loved him, but love doesn't always fix everything. Sometimes it just complicates matters. I would have no trouble believing that Tessa loved Duncan deeply, couldn't take the danger to both of them, the stress and the fear any longer, and decided, "I love you, but I just can't live with you." And walked out.
