Furnace IX: Social Workers and Water Leaks

Jan 13, 2010 15:29

I have just got off the phone with West Hartford's Department of Social Services, Housing Division. Seems that Weatherization is claiming that they can't replace the furnace until a leak in the basement is eliminated. Weatherization is saying that it is a sewage leak. I say that it is a leak from a water main with a missing lid, not a sewage leak; it does not smell like garbage, nor does it smell like shit.

I'm feeling rather suspicious of Weatherization at this point, as the leak was brushed off yesterday as being of no importance and no obstacle to the furnace replacement at all. Now Weatherization is saying that it needs 5,000 dollars to repair the leak BEFORE the furnace is replaced. Which strikes me as a lot of fuss to make about something they swore up and down was of no importance.

I just want some fucking HEAT.

West Hartford Housing says that they may be able to do something (I doubt this; the only people who have done anything in all this are those on my friends list) because they have HUD money already available, instead of having to wait for the state to process funds. I have no faith in them, however. Something will screw up or prevent them from helping or something. I'm sure of it.

Meanwhile, the house has to be cleaned tonight, because someone from Social Services is coming over tomorrow. Social workers have a weird habit of equating being a house-proud neatnik with being mentally competent. It's a waste of time and energy and not at all what I want to spend the day or night doing, but I have no choice if I'm going to convince him that being physically disabled doesn't mean being mentally disabled.

God, I hate this.
