Well, I just took a telephone survey and screwed with a conservative organization in the process.
I was told that a new law would soon be introduced to the legislature. This is the wrong term, by the way--it should be "a new BILL will soon be introduced." After all, it's not a law until both houses of the General Assembly pass it and the governor signs it. What's the matter with these people? Didn't they ever watch Schoolhouse Rock?
Anyway.
The bill in question protects same-sex unions for gay couples the way that marriage is legally protected for straight ones...but has an amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. As of yesterday, it looked like both the bill and the amendment were going to pass.
ETA: The bill itself is a good idea, though I loathe the amendment. (From what I've read, it was tacked on as a compromise to get the more religious members of the Assembly to vote for the bill.)
So the automated caller on the other end of the phone asked me:
"Are you registered to vote in Connecticut?"
"Yes," I said.
"Do you believe that marriage should be defined as being between one man and one woman?"
And I said loudly, "No, I do NOT! I believe marriage should be available to anyone who wants to get married!"
There was a long pause, as if the computer was having trouble handling this concept. Then the automated caller said, in a voice that somehow managed to sound curt and huffy, "Well! Thank you for your time. This has been a survey by the
National Organization for Marriage." Click.
It's times like this that I wish I had a cell phone so that I could Twitter about this. Anyone feel like starting #marriagefail?
