Imagine not even expelling someone who tried to kill another pupil.

Sadly, I can imagine this all too well. I went to school with four psychopaths--they were the children of the trustees, and they ran the school. The four of them gang-raped a friend of mine (she had a nervous breakdown as a result). The leader tried to rape me. All I can say is, thank God for lack of modesty and sharp fingernails.

The second-in-command liked torture. What he could do with pens, pencils and paper clips was obscene. You did NOT want to stay after school, because he would be there, and he would get you into the chem lab--his personal playground. I can't tell you how many kids were burned by acid because of him, or how many kids he terrified into doing his bidding by his threatening to puncture one of their eyes with a pen or a compass.

The third stole. He was particularly fond of stealing money that was intended for the bank so that kids' parents could pay bills. (This was before online banking. You had to deposit cash or checks, and parents often gave the job of going to the bank to their kids because the kids would get out of school before the parents would get out of work...ergo, when the banks were still open.) He liked the power stealing bill money gave him--the fact that he could control who had lights or phone or heat.

The fourth held my science class hostage at gunpoint. You can't imagine what it's like to have someone put four bullets in a revolver, spin the section that the bullets are in, put the gun at the base of your skull, remove the safety and pull the trigger.

Nothing ever happened to these kids. NOTHING.

They were the children of the trustees. And the admins wouldn't do anything to anger the trustees. After all, the trustees were building a new gymnasium.

Bloody hell. I'm glad to say that nothing like 1 or 4 happens here, usually. We do have violence and theft (someone chased another boy at knifepoint into the arms of one of the staff recently) but nothing more than that. (Mind you, the kids with the knife weren't joking.)

I count myself lucky that I live in a gun-free country. People with illegal guns shoot other people with illegal guns, but that accounts for most of the gun crime. I lived for a while in one of the country's blackspots, and there were quite a few shootings while I was there, but generally, the gangs shot their own, and the law-abiding citizens stayed out of it.
