Dawn lurks in the shadows, hating the monks as she watches the Scoobies prepare for a party.
Buffy's birthdays are catastrophes. People get eaten; worlds are imperiled. Every year, Buffy threatens not to celebrate it. And every year, the Scoobies throw her a party. Because they love her.
Dawn recalls her first birthday, when she put a hand in the clown cake Joyce made and squashed its nose flat. A trip to Disneyland, when she was seven. Dining out on baked Alaska at thirteen.
Dawn rubs her hot, leaking eyes, wishing just one of her happy birthdays had been real.
