eumenides1 has a post at her LJ about
a new US law that takes effect tonight, and that affects two subjects dear to the hearts of much of my f-list: websites and porn.
ETA: In honour of the spreading idiocy, I am going to post a filk song written by political satirist Mark Russell for his 1984 TV special.
He was there when you were born,
And he's been watching ever since;
He knows your zip and your area code
And he has your fingerprints.
He is intimate with every
Teeny-weeny thing you do,
And even though you pull the shades,
Big Brother is watching you.
Big Brother, Big Brother,
Big Brother is watching you...mwahaha.
Someone's watching very closely
From the cradle to the tomb.
(Your privacy went out the window
Once you left the womb.)
Big Brother says, "Accept it.
"Human rights? You'll never need 'em!"
They used to call it slavery--
Big Brother calls it freedom.
And there'll be no need for newspapers--
You'll only get depressed.
"Listen to your government;
"Big Brother knows what's best!"
And every war that's fought is good--
So say the Thought Police.
And once you get the hang of it,
You learn that war is peace.
And there'll be no contradiction
When you finally have succumbed.
You'll be the perfect subject
When your brain's completely numb.
You'll be devoid of all opinion,
Devoid of all derision...
They'll offer you a series
On commercial television.
So make sure you always play the game,
Never rock the boat,
For life's too short for bothering
To register and vote.
Sit back! Relax! Have a drink!
Order up some more.
Big Brother's very pleased...
So happy Nineteen-Eighty-Four.
