Once again, the commentary has helped me understand things that I never would have if I'd just read the fic. The details about the Astronomy lessons and the green book are examples. (I wouldn't have guessed a canon-based explanation for the Astronomy lessons partly because so many stories just choose a random subject to have Student A tutor Student B in, but I still wouldn't have guessed it). Thank you for doing this.

And given how much you love Sirius, it's beautiful how you can write from Peter's POV. This is one of the few stories that made me feel for him as a character, not a dishrag.

Fascinating reading - but I'm sorry you didn't explain Remus a bit more. Why, if he knows that Peter has been listening, does he smile at him at the end? If he is so perceptive, how is it that he doesn't realize that Peter has been incredibly hurt by the comments from Sirius & James?

I think he's just smiling to reassure Peter, letting him know that it's all right and he won't tell.

Remus is more perceptive than James or Sirius where Peter is concerned. That doesn't mean he understands everything. He doesn't. Here's how Peter describes the friendship:

Peter knew that he was not part of Remus' pack. Not that Remus was unkind. Far from it. But the connection that existed between the other three had never quite come to life in his case. Remus liked him. He was patient about tutoring Peter in Astronomy. They played pranks together. But when Remus was in pain or worried or upset, it was James and Sirius he turned to. Not Peter.

This shouldn't have hurt. But it did.Peter senses a barrier between them--that they're more like friendly acquaintances than they are friends. I think that Remus feels that the ( ... )

Oh, you're commentaries are always so enlightening. This is one of my favorite fics because the theme isn't betrayal - instead, it's loyalty. Peter wants to be loyal to the rest of his friends, wants to be loyal to Dumbledore, but has a worldview disimilar - he's cynical and jaded, with a lifetime of taunts and teases that have worn him down. But he still tries to stay loyal and I think eventually, he decides that betrayal is easier than loyalty.

Of course, that just means he'll have to be loyal to someone else - this time, Voldemort. Everywhere he turns, loyalty has to smack him and he's left following behind. But I hope that he has one more betrayal in him.

Oh, and cool explanation about the rhyme!
