After month upon month of our fruitless drummer search, Smokestack Lightning has made the descision to forego being the loudest, nastiest, grittiest, ballsiest blues rock band in the history of blues and rock, and instead switch over to acoustic folk. No drummer, no distortion, just good old fashion americana. Its almost kind of funny given that not too long ago, we were trying to figure out how to play Howlin' Wolf tunes with funk bass, kick in the ass riffs, and throat shredding vocals. Whats equally interesting is how quickly we all jumped on the idea. Allen first presented the idea, and Fabe and I jumped on it with little or no argument. We've already come up with a long list of songs for a repotoir. I'm gonna get good at bottleneck and harmonica, Allens gonna brush up on his fiddle chops, were all gonna start writing lyrics. I'm genuinely excited about this.
Perhaps this is a good time to update on stuff I've been listening to.
My favorite new musician is Papa Mali, who combines delta blues with New Orleans voodoo funk, psychadelia, and badass slide guitar. Also from New Orleans (I'm completely obsessed with anything having to do with the city) is Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes, a funk rock band that incorporates old fashion jazz, classical, klezmer, hip hop, metal and just about any other style you can imagine.
Interestingly enough, my folk music phase began shortly before the decision to change band. I've been digging bob dylan of course, as well as chris smither, who has incredible at tall stacks. James McMurtry, a left wing alt.country singer has also been rocking my life lately.
