So I was on the bus yesterday morning on the way to school, furiously trying to cram my entire history book into my head. My eyes were red from the lack of sleep, as I was up till 1 studying, and thenn up again from 4 to.. well.. study. Anyway, I wasn't sitting at my usual place at the back because I needed to (yuck) study , which was why I was sitting somewhere halfway in the front. Almost near the kids. They were being squeally and generally noisy, which is what caused me to watch them for a few minutes.

As a kid on another route ( Bus 3), I remember that it seemed like a common goal amongst us younger ones to try an sit as far possible at the back as we could. Each new school year, we would gleefuly move that one glorious seat towards the back, so we could be as close to the seniors as possible. When some senior happened to talk to us, even tease us, we would answer in awe, because WOW a senior had chosen to bestow words upon us lowly juniors! One day , when I was in the 4th grade, I actually managed to talk my way into sitting right at the back, with the "big kids" and listen to music, when we kind of hit the back of someone's garden wall. The most vivid scene from that day which I remember is the sight of these large black ants crawling out of the crack. Nothing happened to my friend( who was a year older) and me, but the teachers almost threw a fit when they realized where we sitting.

Anyway, the point is I remember that we really respected our seniors, and a common thought amongst us was " I can't wait to be in senior school!" ( which is a separate building, starting 7th grade onwards).

Now however, these kids on my bus never show that kind of adulation. They seem to think they're even smarter than us, and when one of us actually says something nice, they all kind of look at us with these really condesending looks on their faces like "yeah, whatever". And what I realized was NONE of them, over the past few years, has even attempted to make the gradual journey to the back seat. Sure, once or twice one of them has come RIGHT at the back, and talked back really rudely when asked to move a seat forward. All of them, ranging from the age of 5-12 sit right up front with the teachers.

My seniors, although they used to tease us, would actually make us feel protected. I remember when we had those odd emergencies when we needed to leave school early, the seniors from the higher classes would come around school looking for the junior ones who were on their buses, and then help in making sure we got home safely. Now, as a senior myself, I don't see in point in doing that as these kids dont seem to want our help at all, as all they want is an oppurtunity to talk back to us.

Like I said in my last post, it will soon be my last year at school, and one things for sure I'm not going to miss these kids. I feel bad for them actually. Maybe I'm just feeling old. But these guys are missing out on one of the best things about school - the bond with the seniors.

PS: they actually made me feel a bit better and not so much like an alien when they started playing that "oo ma goshi" thing.
