We took Gerty (our '93 Tempo that I love like a child) to the mechanic yesterday morning because the brakes were acting funny. Very funny. Indeed, it was actually scary - the pedal was very stiff, stopping time was horrendous and I could *smell* the brake pads rubbing against the rotors.
Found out later that morning that the entire brake system had failed. The master cylinder had went kaput and caused the emergency brake to engage. Thus, our brakes had been stuck in the "on" position for quite some time without us even realizing. This lead to our break shoes cracking on all four wheels, the calipars all warping, and the rotors being torn to smithereens. Long story short, we had to have the entire break system rebuilt.
The cost for all of this - more than I make in two weeks.
Today I called back to check on the progress of the repair. Apparently when the mechanic took the car out for a road test our rusty break lines also ruptured under the pressure.
The cost for this additional repair. Another $100.
The best thing about all this - I can't afford to pay for the repairs until next pay day. "When's that", you ask? One week from tomorrow. *sigh*
