So, I have been playing
Puzzle Quest on my PSP - and it's awesome - a really unique mix of puzzle and rpg-ish aspects. It is a geat game to play that doesn't require commitment and it's available in nearly every format imaginable, so I recommend it as a pick-up for pretty much everybody. It actually started as a PC game and that's how I first played the demo for it. It has been described as a puzzle gem-swapping game that hardcore gamers don't have to be ashamed of. (c:
But right now I actually want some commitment, so it's not sufficient to be my only game that I'm playing right. I want plot and development and long-term potential. So, after realizing this last night and spending some time looking through my options I have decided to embark on a Final Fantasy journey through all the main entries in the series beginning with the original. I have nearly all of them with the exception of a couple, so I am beginning with
Final Fantasy I and II on the GBA. I have them on the NES, but that doesn't solve the "can't get the tv from
ambientguise problem" so I'll be sticking with handheld for the most part. And that is entirely possible because most of the early Final Fantasy games have been re-released about 5 million times each for every console imaginable.
I played about half an hour of Final Fantasy I last night and it reminded me so much of the first Dragon Warrior games too (the precursors to Dragon Quest - one of my current favorite series). It's funny how little distinction there was between JRPG's in the beginning. That's not to say that they still don't have their similarities today - but back then they couldn't even artistically differentiate themselves - there just wasn't enough graphical power to make them look different. So it's interesting to think that FF and DQ started out essentially the same when today they are so very different. I have mixed feelings about the latest FF games and really haven't gotten into them that much. Whereas, the current DQ games rock, in my opinion. So maybe playing through the FF universe in chronological order will give me a chance to see where they diverge.
