Before I go to bed, I want to also mention that Drew and I got a most wonderful phone call today.
It was none other than the man himself- Matt Jackson, all the way from Kabul, Afghanistan.*
It's the first time I've heard from him directly since he left in February and oh god you guys can't imagine how wonderful it was to hear his voice. I actually started crying- and I really don't cry much as my real life friends would know.
He reports all is well (or at least well for being at war). He was stationed on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border for awhile there and he said it was extremely dangerous and he's just glad to be in safe Kabul. He's been restationed from the front lines to working radios and jamming signals and stuff now- much to my relief. He also said that while he had originally planned to move back to his home state of Florida after getting out of the army he has decided to stay here in Georgia. This is something Drew and I rejoiced over because fuck, life without Matt Jackson is a sad, sad thing.
Just, oh god. Guys. When Drew kicked open my door and held out the phone to me and said "Natalie, you have a phone call from Kabul." my heart just stopped. I know it's only been three months but goddamn I worry about him every single goddamn day. The very idea of him not coming home makes me physically ill. But no goddamnit he's the Captain and he'll make it happen. (As we commonly say.) He will be back in Atlanta, Georgia. We'll be there to see him the second he steps off that bus. He told us that we were like his family and I believe him, I really do. He says he should be home in winter of this year and if those motherfuckers delay him any longer I will kill them myself. (Well, not really but you know what I mean.)
Just... Oh sweet lord it's good to know he's okay.
*Matt Jackson (almost always referred to by full name or as "The Captain") is a very close and treasured friend of mine of over 4 years who is currently on his second tour of duty in the Iraq War. First he was in Iraq proper for over a year and after an all too brief return home he now is in Afghanistan. He is a licensed sniper and has battled on the front lines in both countries. He is also a certified badass and one of my favorite people in life.
