Yet another way I ignore reality--making fic recommendations. 13 Due South recs and a Numb3rs rec because I just randomly read the story today and fell in love with it.
As always, these aren't the only great fics in the fandoms, these are just things I bookmarked because they struck me as particularly well written, or the plot caught my imagination, or they made me laugh really hard, or made me swoon. They're all Fraser/Kowalski, because I love Vecchio but I don't want to picture him naked. A lot of them are NC-17 because I'm pervy that way.
But first, visual aids for anyone who hasn't seen Due South and wants to know what these guys look like.
On the left is Constable Benton Fraser, RCMP and his deaf half-wolf, Diefenbaker. On the right is Detective Ray Kowalski.
And now the fic recs
Short, sweet, and wicked
The Adventures of Regina, Queen of Manitoba by Theodosia, PG-13ish; Ray just doesn't do drag the same way Fraser does. The second to last paragraph contains one of my favorite lines ever.
Cabin Dreams by Kass, F/K, NC-17; Ray and Stella used to talk about getting a summer cabin…
Revising by Lalejandra, F/K implied, Rish; I love complex Stella and the idea that the split between her and Ray is a lot more complicated than he always makes it out to be. This is actually a remix of Beth H's lovely
Unplanned.
Taste by
buzzylittleb, F/K, R to NC-17ish; Fraser's ever evolving sense of taste.
Wedge by Resonant, F/K, NC-17; you could call this a PWP, but you'd be wrong. I prefer to think of it as a beautiful little glimpse of the hearts of Fraser and Ray that just happens to take place during sex.
A nice, medium length
Broadway Hotel by Resonant, F/K, NC-17; post CoTW Ray has to learn who he is.
A Fine Romance by Sihaya Black and Chickwriter, F/K, NC-17; an old friend of Fraser's from his Depot days is in Chicago for a conference, and Fraser begins asking Ray for romantic advice. Ray is not pleased.
Save Your Wild, Wild Life by Lalejandra, F/K, NC-17; After Ray dropped out of college he spent a year and a half of his life playing in a band, wearing glitter and black eyeliner, which Fraser thinks is damn hot. Not a crossover, but takes place in a universe where Velvet Goldmine was real and not just a movie. The sequel is
Band of Gold, K/male, K/female, NC-17, recounting Ray's band life.
Watershed by Nifra Idril, F/K, NC-17; Did Fraser almost kiss him, or was that some sort of weird Canadian thing?
Long and glorious
Pas de Deux by Sihaya Black, F/K, NC-17; an AU in which Ray's a dancer and Fraser (who's still a Mountie in this) is one of his students, with guest appearances by Stella, Vecchio, and Victoria (boo, hiss!).
Shades of Ray by Miriam Heddy, F/K, NC-17; a spare, beautiful fic where Ray figures out who he is and where he is post-CotW.
Teeth of the Hydra by Resonant, F/K, NC-17; a nice, long casefic involving tattoos, a wonderfully complex version of young Ray and Stella, grown up Ray confused about his sexuality, then not so confused, and Fraser being the Fraser he is when you take the time to look past the uniform. And tattoos! The short follow-up piece is called
Display.
Turning by Kellie Matthews, F/K, NC-17; CotW-related, angsty, first-time, going from Canada to Chicago and back again. I perversely love angsty, guilt-ridden Fraser, and I (not so perversely) also love Eric being purposefully vague and enigmatic, and Kellie writes both really well.
**********
And I know it seems wrong on the surface. I know it does, but it just works so well and I love Larry so much and she gets the voices and physical movements of all the characters so spot on that I have to risk squicking people and rec a really, really good Numb3rs fic. It's a Larry/Charlie story by Miram Heddy, and it's called
Dinner for Four, which is actually a sequel to
Making Out, but "Making Out" has sex in it and if the thought of Larry and Charlie getting it on squicks you, you might want to read the fantastic "Dinner for Four" first, just to sort of ease your way into the whole thing.
I need to make Nick/Greg recs next, don't I?
